Met this guy walking across the road, he was regal and was full of life. Also he wanted his picture taken. You can see that in his eyes. _______________________________________________________ #animals #parks #nationalpark #yellowstone #elk #yearling #adventure #findingyourself #npsyellowstone #nationalparkgeek #protectingparks #59parks #national_park_photography #wildlife #rei1440project #nationalparkobsessed

National park 56/59: Capitol Reef. In a state of epic places, this one takes the cake for us. Or takes the pie, as it were 😋.

It’s been such a pleasure taking this group across Utah. So far we’ve dominated 4 National Parks and we aren’t done yet! Photos taken by the coolest guy aka 📸 @prickleecactus

I feel like a talk a lot on here about national park things making me teary. Do you all think I’m a crazy person? Or do you also have Awestruck Nature Weeps? Either way, this scene made me cry.

It’s been a few weeks now since we’ve been full-time in Buster. We were staying with my parents for a minute and now we have a @suboverland borrowed from David’s cousin that’s getting us up to Alaska. Margie asks about Buster constantly, and though we’ve assured her he’s fine hanging out in Idaho for now, we also have to keep reminding ourselves that the bus is the only home Margie remembers and that it might be even harder on her to sell him than it will be on the rest of us 😭😭.

Wander often, wonder always ✨ One of our favourite pastimes is getting outside and going for a walk or a hike and we even like to do this whilst on holiday. So much so our destinations are sometimes decided by if there is good hiking nearby or specific hikes we would like to do🚶🏻‍♀️ Who else loves to hike? Comment below ⇩

One of our favorite hikes in Capitol Reef is Cohab Canyon where, after a steep initial climb, the trail takes you into a narrow sandstone canyon with loads of slots to explore and boulders to climb. It’s heaven on a hot day and especially engaging for kids!

Capitol Reef is named for the Waterpocket Fold—a wrinkle in the Earth’s crust that rises up like a reef out of the central Utah desert—and for the domes of sandstone that reminded early explorers of the U.S. Capitol building. It’s far and away the least-visited of Utah’s parks and we love how low-key it is, even during the busy season!

Pie is integral to the Capitol Reef experience, which makes this perfect park even better 😊. In the old pioneer settlement of Fruita, at the center of the park, you can pick fruit in the orchards or get homemade fruit pies at the Gifford House near the campground. I’m picky about pie so trust me when I say this one was DELICIOUS (we had the strawberry rhubarb.) And if you just can’t get enough sweet stuff, make another stop in Bicknell on the way into or out of the park for some pickle and pinto bean pie at the Sunglow Restaurant. My dad has been talking about the pie there for ages, so on this visit we finally stopped to try it—and we were pleasantly surprised! The pickle pie tastes like sweet relish (but somehow works) and I’m pretty sure the pinto bean pie was 90% sweetened condensed milk 😅. My dad also highly recommends the oatmeal and buttermilk pies 👍🏻👍🏻.

Little wild child, in her element. This girl’s personality is SO BIG and I feel like she needs a good 5 hours a day of unstructured play outside before we can even think about approaching the indoors with any civility 😉.

Arches national park lies just outside of Moab in Utah and is Home to the worlds largest concentration of natural sandstone arches. With over 2000 arches located in the park it’s easy to see how @archesnps got its name This hike to sand dune arch was pretty cool as we were hiking through deep sand which as it turns out was a great workout. I’m curious, do you like to be active when you travel? Or do you prefer to chill out and relax? Leave a comment below ⇩

Our visits to the Utah parks have been a little scattered: Zion in January, Arches and Canyonlands in March, Bryce in June, and now Capitol Reef. We didn’t plan to separate them so much, but sometimes our schedule isn’t as smooth as we think it will be! So the closest park to our launching point in Idaho ended up being the last of the lower 48’s parks we visited on this trip. This wasn’t intentional, but I think it was fitting: driving into this park that’s been so influential for our family felt like a sort of homecoming ❤️.

just your average hike to a glacier.... • Out of the original 150 glaciers in @glaciernps, only 25 remain. The one we hiked to, Grinnell, is estimated to vanish by 2030. Got a bit emotional thinking how many people will never get to see this magnificent place. A nice reminder to vote for people who believe that climate change is real! ❄️

My first visit to Capitol Reef, a little over 5 years ago, was properly life changing for me. I was part of a writing class that focused on essays about nature and took 3-day trips into the wilderness to hike, cross-country ski, read, write and share our writing. It was the first time I really spent any dedicated, extended time in nature as an adult, and I was with the most interesting, curious, smart group of fellow students, all of whom had done much more outdoor recreation than I had. I was a masters student in creative nonfiction and 7 months pregnant with Graham, and I was thinking a lot about who I wanted to be as a writer and mother and person. Being outdoorsy was something I’d always aspired to, but to that point it hadn’t been a big part of my life. But as I thought about the pattern David and I were setting for our fledging family, I wanted this to be a part of it: time spent outside, together, waking ourselves up to the beauty in the world and in each other. (@dabowman took this picture 6 years ago when he was part of the same wilderness writing class, a few semesters before I was in it. He was just getting back into his childhood loves of art and photography after years of focusing on music, and reigniting his love for all things outdoors, too. 😊)
