Using timers was the first ADHD tip I came across. There’s a reason it’s such a common and foundational strategy: it’s simple and it works! They made such a difference in my productivity and sanity when I worked an office job and continue to be super helpful whenever I need to tackle a big project or complete a task that requires sitting down for long periods of time. As I’ve come to use timers in different settings and for different things, I’ve come to use these guidelines you might find helpful: ••• ONE: Determine how long you can realistically focus on the task at hand. For me, twenty minutes is the magic number. ••• TWO: Take breaks between timed work sessions that use a different part of your brain. If you’re sitting still at a desk or computer for 20 minutes, take a break that requires you to physically get up and move, like filing paperwork, making copies, or folding laundry. If your task is one where you are taking in a lot of information, don’t spend your breaks clogging your brain drain with even more information with activities like social media, videos, or podcasts. Do something quiet and mindless. ••• THREE: Decide where the line is between taking a break and completely switching gears. If your break is too long, it can be hard to transition back into the original task. 7-10 minutes usually works for me, but depending on the time of day and project, a longer break is fine. ••• FOUR: Find creative ways to keep track of time. You don’t have to use a kitchen timer or your phone. Depending on what you’re trying to concentrate on, you can use a YouTube video, a podcast, or a certain number of songs. These more fun methods of keeping track of time can also function as a way to make a boring activity like tidying feel less excruciating. ••• Do you have any timer tips? Let me know down below! ••• Alissa ••• ••• 📸 Background image from Pinterest (original creator unknown) + words and cropping by me.

The progress.... Day 4 with no adhd meds. I packed healthy snacks to make sure I didn’t splurge at the vending machines. Breakfast frittata, Celery and PB, orange, apple. Probably should have brought one more. My lunch was light, spinach with egg and sardine salad on top. (Weird mix I know). I did notice that I’m seeing things differently, like how I was off adhd meds in the past. Small things, signs in the hallways, colorful soap bottles in the bathroom. -talking to people and they start looking around because I guess I wasn’t looking at them. I’m looking at people walking by a flag, the massive amounts of food people have on their desks etc.. -slower at the norm, when I used to just sit down and get it done. Now I’m sitting there trying to get stuff done. - Fiddling - no patience. None. - sleep last night was so hard, I couldn’t do it. I really want to see if working out will help but I have to wait I have to go into work early tomorrow so I’ll have to put that on hold. So now if I could do this paper!!!!!!!! And I still need to try again for that psychologist Appt! #adhdproblems #overwhelmed #adhdwomen #adhd_life

NEW COLUMN FOR @additudemag ! - And this week’s is a serious one. I hear all the time from parents that their children’s IEPs or 504s are not being followed by their school. - Anyone else? And we get super frustrated and emotional when we see our kids hurting and not succeeding without the proper supports and scaffolding. - So have a read (link in column) and if you are looking for an amazing road map to help you navigate the process, then read until the end where I give you my favorite! - And as always let me know in the comments below how you navigate this process. - #orderoochaos #orderoutofchaos #additudemagazine #academiccoach #organization #adhdkids #organizingtips #school #students #adhd #adhdproblems #adhdparenting #adhdawareness #adhdkids #adhdsupport #adhdmom #momblogger #parentingblogger #parentingtips #parentinghacks #writer #columnist #adhdblogger #specialneeds #iep #parentteacherconference

6 months ago, the storm started brewing. I had just been diagnosed with ADHD at 30 years old. I was overwhelmed, tired, depressed and feeling overall hopeless. I was searching for the thing that would fix me. That solution to all the times I felt something was wrong with me. At first, I had so much hope. I thought I found the answer to the problem and the solution was right around the corner. It took the last 6 months to realize that no single solution would “fix” me and most important that I didn’t need fixing. I learned that learning into my differences and working with them was my super power. I learned that following someone else’s plan to happiness won’t get you to your own. I learned how to stop trying to STOP having ADHD and start learning how to live with ADHD, and SHINE BRIGHTER than ever before. I have found MY steps, not anyone else’s. I am shining bright while “Living Fit with Letters” 🌈☀️❤️💛💚💙☀️🌈

I get so frustrated with my bedroom lately. It’s not large enough to share space with a desk, but I have to make part of it an office due to the needs of the household. So there’s currently not enough room for a functional dresser. I got tired of looking for socks for everyone so I matched as many as I could for every member of the family and threw them in this huge basket together. The baby has his own tiny sock drawer but all the rest of us basically have the same sized feet, so it sort of works. But I am tired of things only “sort of” working. What do people do with mismatched socks? My little shoe box is overflowing AGAIN and I don’t want to throw the lone socks away?! So I try to match ones that are close to the the same size, shape and thickness. Also notice that the door can’t open all the way because the two main laundry baskets live behind the wall. And I can’t get in and out of the closet because of a bunch of Christmas decorations that need to be unassembled, not to mention the fact that the damned desk takes up half of the closet doorway. This room makes me feel defeated after only 20 minutes, but hey, at least there’s not laundry on the floor and I can walk across the floor now, even if I am getting my son’s spilled cheerios all over my feet. 😢 Scroll right for the gnarly mountain of clothes in the before picture. ➡️ #chronicillness chronicillness #chronicpain #chronicfatiguesyndrome #chronicillnesswarrior #chronicillnessawareness #adhdproblems

Let’s talk about Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder otherwise known as ADHD 👦🏻 In today’s society we see a child running around, unable to really sit still for awhile or focus/give attention to something and sometimes we automatically think “the kid is too hyper, must have ADHD, he/she needs medication” FALSE!! We need to be able to distinguish normal human behavior from a disorder that is causing dysfunction. It’s normal for a 5 year old to not be able to sit still very long, or not pay attention in class especially because school is not always fun. However we usually start to compare “But Susie doesn’t act like that she’s always able to sit still”. That’s when we start to make judgments about normal human behavior because in our eyes the child doesn’t meet societal norms because they’re not “listening or not sitting still”. This disorder is often over diagnosed which then leads to over medication for normal behavior that was misconstrued as a “problem”. To learn more about ADHD, check out my new blog by clicking on the link above! 🔝 Also check out this YouTube video on a very clear explanation of ADHD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouZrZa5pLXk As always reach out to your physician for a mental health referral and remember that being an active person or child is normal, it becomes abnormal when you can’t function properly in your everyday life. So I admit, there are certain parts of self care that I suck at. Like making sure I take all my meds, supplements, ect. I need every day. Phone reminders don’t help and I’m not good at filling a pill case once a week. And I have to take certain things on certain cycle days to keep my hormones balanced which adds another layer of keeping on top of things that I can’t rely on my brain to always remember. I am good at keeping track of my cycle though. So I grabbed 4 pill cases, and my #cricut, and covered up the days of the week with numbers for cycle days instead. I glued some magnets to the back to put them up on my fridge so I always see them. And I can use a dry erase marker to write on the vinyl sticker to check off as I go! I’ve got special gem stickers to indicate hormone meds. And of course I had to make it with #prettypastels and #holographic vinyl. #selfcare #pillcases #momlife #momblogger #diyblogger #organization #adhdproblems #isuckatremembering #iheartorganizing #autismmama #homeorganization #managingoneself

With ADHD come struggles with working memory. I've forgotten what I was forgetting many times! Working memory is like the sticky notes of the brain or the RAM in a computer: it's information that we need to hold in mind in the moment and make scribble notes with until we figure out if we want to keep it and file it in our knowledge vault. Here are my Top Tips to help with working memory challenges: 1. Expand Your Brain If working memory is the sticky note of the brain, then expand your brain with actual notes! Use ONE book for everything. Planning, ideas, lists, journaling, tracking, scheduling... EVERYTHING. Get a size that you can take that book with you everywhere. Give it a permanent home in your purse or pocket and treat it as if it were as important as your phone. If you want to remember something, anything, write it down in that book. It doesn't have to be some fancy bullet journal spread or look perfect, but you can make it fun to use with stickers or a cool pen. It's been shown that writing things down actually improves working memory, and the more you use it, the more you'll remember to use it. 2. Develop a Photographic Memory In a situation where you don't have a pen or your book? Take a picture of the thing (if you can) and type a note with the photo. With your smartphone you have instant access to a camera at all times, and most will let you add notes to photos so why not use it? Create an album of Things to Remember and build it into your evening/morning routine to transfer what's in the album into your brain expander book. Or keep on your phone as a separate photo album for a 'memory backup' and clean it out when you clean out your phone. 3. Dump Multitasking - Focus on One Thing at a Time Only If you're lost without your to-do list (a lot of us with ADHD love our lists), limit it to a max of 5 things a day, and don't even look at what's next until you've finished your first thing. That means not answering calls, texts, reading emails etc.... while you're working on the current list item. Take short breaks if you need, but stick with that item until it's done. The good news is this also helps with the eternal struggle of finishing stuff.

❤ BLESSING & RELIEF ❤ I got finally diagnoced after 8 years of wondering do I have ADHD or in worst case.... am I just nuts? 🤔 It feels like the biggest, very important, last and lost piece of the puzzle had finally found. That feels actually very empowering 😘🧠 Thank you goes to @partanenjohannes who ones among coaching us said I might be one. That started the process. Now I am waiting a decision of rehabilitation. That should help to simplify my daily routines and change negative thinking of myself which all uups, upsidasys and shitty situations have caused during....😬 decades. They do not give me medication cause according the doctor: "You are such a smart ass that I'm pretty sure that rehabilitation is enough. Your work has forced you to create good routines for ADHD. Besides the medication could kill your creativitiness. And we don't want that, do we? If you still feel after the program you need something, then we consider medication. In a mean while, enjoy this new life." I am bloody proud of being ADHD 😘🧠 Special thanks goes to my partner in crime & best friend @melker39 who has been super suportive during all process last few eyed opening months the testing took time 😘 #repost @adhdpeople (@get_repost) ・・・ #adhdpeople #adhdproblems #adhd #adhdlife #adhdparent #adhdprobs #adhdwomen #adhdentrepreneur #colourfulllife

Today is a bad pain day. As the nurse described it yesterday “it feels like you’ve been plugged in to an electric socket and even when the pains gone, you can remember the feeling like it’s still there and you’re afraid to move.” That fear of pain also stops me from doing a lot of things. Today I wanted to go to town and plan out what I needed to get done before my surgery. I literally couldn’t even go for a shower. It’s important for me to forgive myself for not being able to do things, to not be so hard on myself and to just do what I can on bad days like this 🧡 • • • • • #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthblogger #mentalhealthadvocate #mentalillness #mentalillnessrecovery #mentalillnessawareness #depressionawareness #depressionrecovery #adhd #adhdawareness #adhdproblems #chronicpain #chronicpainwarrior #chronicpainawareness #herniateddisc #sciaticarelief #sciatica

One of the things that my clients struggle with is how to respond when non-believers come at them. It's hard enough to talk about having adhd, and then we have to deal with criticism and doubt. Fidgeting is defined as "small movements, especially of the hands and feet, caused by nervousness or impatience”. Often when people fidget, we blame it on having eaten too much sugar, drinking too much coffee, or watching too much TV. But fidgeting isn't a product of our modern era. In fact, it seems to be a part of human nature and play a part in learning for some. Science has another explanation for fidgeting and it has nothing to do with nervousness, impatience, or drinking too much Red Bull. It's a method of keeping the brain active and focused!! #autismmom #fidgeting #fidget #adhdsupport #adhdlife #adhdkids #adhdawareness #adhdparenting #adhdproblems #adultadhd #adhdmom #adhdbrain #specialed #specialeducation #specialeducationteacher #specialedteacher #specialeducationteachers #hyperactivechild #adhdkidsareawesomekids #autistickids #fidgettoys #fidgets #fidgettoy #kidsareawesome #adultadhd #adhdwomen

This meme from @myaspieworld is SPOT ON!! 😂😂😂 Text only please! Whats up with the phone call hate?! Is it an ADHD "thing", a sensory processing "thing", an introvert "thing"? Something with this generation?! All I know is there is a lack of social ques that make phone calls awkward & stressful for me. I have a few people that I know very well and talking to them is fine. Id like to dig deeper & write a post about it sometime. Sout to of my other ADHD homies like @adhd_haseeb that have worked hard to try to correct thier phone phobias. Certain techniques, like writing down what you want to say/need to talk about before calling can be really helpful (if I absolutely have to make a phone call sometimes Ill do that). Do you hate phone calls? What are your thoughts on the phone call hate?!

. THE CASE FOR MEDICAL MARIJUANA AND ADHD There is a growing understanding within the medical community of the effects of marijuana on the human body’s endocannbinoid system, which plays a role in functions such as pain regulation, inflammation mitigation, and mood alterations through the activation of various receptors. There is also an increasing body of evidence to suggest that marijuana may reduce anxiety and alleviate stress, as well as indications that it could play a role in managing the symptoms of ADHD. . Signs and symptoms of adult ADHD can include: * Difficulty getting started on tasks * Variable attention to details * Difficulties with self-organization and prioritization * Poor persistence in tasks that require sustained mental effort * Impulsivity and low frustration tolerance (to varying degrees) * Hyperactivity (less salient symptom in adults) * Chaotic lifestyles * Disorganization * Substance abuse (in some patients) -Clearly, this is an issue that for millions of Americans does not go away with age. . ADHD is defined as “a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development.” ADHD is often perceived as a childhood disorder. It is true that symptoms of the disorder most always appear during childhood, but they can persist into teenage years and adulthood. . According to the National Institution of Mental Health, the overall prevalence of current ADHD in U.S. adults age 18 to 44 is over four percent, and the estimated lifetime prevalence is around eight percent. . . #cannaescapes #adhd #adhdproblems #adhdparenting #adhdawareness #adhdsupport #marijuana #floridammj #flmmj #floridamarijuana #floridatrees #medicalmarijuana #floridapatients #miami #tampa #jacksonville #orlando #kissimmee #cannabidiol #florida #deerfieldbeach #broward #palmbeach #dade #floridacannabis #medicalcannabis #flcannabis #floridamedicalcannabis #cannabisnews #cannabis

As #parents this is so hard to understand at times. We need to give our kids tools to communicate their needs and even then sometimes they just can’t so WE need to speak for them. WE need to understand that they may need need more support. And we need to be extremely patient and understanding. None of this is easy even when you know what to do!⠀ •⠀ •⠀ •⠀ •⠀ •⠀ •⠀ #adhd #adhdparenting #adhdmom #adhddad #parenting #mom #adhdsupport #adhdproblems #adhdsolutions #instaadhd #instaadhdcoach #calgary #adhdtips #adhdtools #adhdkids #adhdlife #adhdwomen #adhdadults #adhdbrain #yyccoach #adhdcoach #internationalcoach #adhdneeds

. When do you take time to do nothing? My brain often needs extra time to digest things. My brain often thinks about so many things so fast it needs extra time to recoup. 🗝 Two sides to the same coin . I think I take a lot of time, yet listening to a webinar this morning: No. I don’t as much as I used to. . I would take the time to NOT on: 📝 Sunday’s with #notmyyiayia. Walking to the grocery store everyday. Hanging with maverick. Sitting on my front porch every morning having my coffee listening to the birds. I would meditate daily to really not think of anything. . I’ve veered off path with taking time to NOT. It’s starting to effect me. Just like hiking though, don’t panic and correct the path. . sometimes taking time to NOT doesn’t mean you don’t think about things at all. For me it can also mean letting the thought flow & keep on moving, which kinda is like meditating I suppose*... . [* Epiphany while writing copy]

Progress on the book is getting a little too close to publication for comfort... Down to choosing a title, having the cover designed, and formatting it into an e-book. I definitely feel myself working on these things slower, or procrastinating on these things out of fear. I don't know what I'm really afraid for though... It's like every step closer to publication is a step closer towards a cliff. So I'll take my advice and set a deadline. March 8th the book will be on Amazon. End of story (8 is my favorite number). #adhdawareness #adhd #vagabond #adhdproblems #adhdparenting #adhdsupport #adhdlife #adhdprobs #adultadhd #positivevibes #hashtag

Our minds never stop. Literally. Never. Stop. It's so key that we make more space between ourselves and our thoughts. Why? Because our thoughts are like a manuscript that inform the movie of our life. Every thing we believe and give credence to, colours our experience 🕶️🌎 . . So it's not about controlling our thoughts, or turning off the mind. There is no off switch (I know, so annoying). BUT, we can slowly start to pause ourselves in those thoughts and simply see how they keep running. Your thoughts are age-old, that's why they keep playing. A lot of them come from our ancestors and their ancestors. We borrow all of these beliefs and make them "true." 🌀 . . The good news is that you are NOT your thoughts. YOU are the one observing the thoughts. You are the awareness and the consciousness seeing the thoughts arise. Even if they are negative thoughts you can't seem to get yourself out of, that's okay. Don't even try to get out of them. Just simply see them, just as they are, thoughts. Information that wants to pattern our experience. 👁️

Did you know ADHD can in fact be a workplace liability? Wild, right? I thought so and got a little scared because HI I'M PAIGE, I HAVE ADHD... lol. Before even coming across this chart, I have before or presently strive to make 10 out of 10 of these steps ritualistic. I have over 16 different alarms on my phone that go off every day, each reminding me of a respective task. Whether it's work related or something as mundane as taking my vitamins. Does the condition make it hard to get organized or stay focused? 100%. But! It can also mean unmatched novelty, dynamic relational skills, and creative leadership. #adhd #adhdproblems #adhdawareness #adultadhd #brainwithaferrariengine #butbrakesofabicycle

Pretty much sums up my #mood today. . . . Its beautifully and odly warm & sunny today in London. . . . I don't want to be working although my job is outdoors so that's positive. And I'm getting exercise :]. . . . But this warm bright day is lifting my mood. It's making me look forward to the sunny days to come. . . . And it's making me want to just spend some quality time with SO on a blanket in the sun in a quiet spot eating, hugging, smoking, chatting and just enjoying the moments. . . . BACH FLOWER REMEDY: A Natural Solution to Calm Anxious Kids, Emotional Grounding issues and Big Emotions • • • Adults have complex emotions that we try to manage on a daily basis. It is no wonder that children have big emotions too. Consequently, from time to time, kids do not know how to handle their current mental state. • • • I am still amazed at the random events that trigger meltdowns and tantrums. Such small things can elicit strong emotional reactions from tiny, little humans. Dealing with kids tantrums and meltdowns are some of parenting’s most frustrating challenges. • • • There are bigger issues, don’t get me wrong, but in the moment, emotions can run high for parents as well. We have to pull on our own oxygen mask and gear up to be the one who remains calm and patient. Parents and caregivers have to be the individuals that allow the child to pass through the trauma knowing he or she has a safe space. • • • For more information about the Bach Flower Remedy please visit our website at www.ilslearningcorner.com or follow the link in the profile. • • • #bachflowers #tantrum #meltdown #parenting #kids #babies #emotional #calming #instamom #momlife #occupationaltherapy #pediatrictherapy #ottips #sensory #sensoryprocessingdisorder #adhd #adhdproblems #adhdparenting #preschool #kindergarten #homeschool #homeschoolmom

Organization doesn't come easy for someone with ADHD. To organize is to have structure, to have items in place. To be able to sort and figure out where things belong. Basically to have a system for various areas of your life, so things run smooth. Tips: Spend 20 mins daily to clean out desk, backpacks, kitchen counter, etc. Have a list of steps for each area needing structure and organization. Set up systems for daily items, papers, etc. By doing so, you take less time looking for things and you won't forget where they are at. Have visuals for ease, put in main areas of house/work. Vocalize the process and walk through the tasks to help develop systems. #echcounseling #crystallakeil #algonquinil #mentalillness #mentalhealth #adhd #add #endthestigma #adhdproblems #adhdawareness #adhdparenting #adhdadult #additudemagazine #adhdisreal #adhdsupport #adhdlife #adhdexplained #executivefunction #emotionalregulation #taskinitiation #focus #impulsivity #attention #planning #organization #mindlessbehavior #selfesteem #irritability #anxiety #neurodevelopment

Repost from @ginsburgadvanced ➡️ Many LSAT students are eligible to test with accommodations for the @official_lsac LSAT but are not aware of the eligibility requirements, don’t know how to apply, or have been told by a peer that testing with accommodations is “cheating“. It is not cheating – it is your right as a student with disabilities to level the playing field for yourself when you take exams. When we “freeze” or “go blank”, read reading comp passages and logical reasoning arguments over and over because we are not absorbing and processing the information, and experience panic and worry that we can’t seem to kick once the clock starts, we are struggling with symptoms of test anxiety. Panic – based behaviors are time consuming on test day, simply put. They don’t help us focus on the questions in front of us, and instead, hijack our cognition and make us feel like the test is a race to finish. In truth, we only need to pick up 14 points per test section in order to hit a 150. That 150 is a manageable goal to work towards and will allow us to test with mental clarity and apply test-taking strategy with precision. Feel free to reach out for a free phone consult with our @ginsburg_edlaw legal team to find out more about testing with accommodations and utilizing our accuracy-based test strategies to see the big point gains we need. Our students, on average, see 7-10 point improvements with our comprehensive approach to test success! . . . . . #thisisgat #srgedlaw #testanxiety #anxiety #anxietyrelief #lsat #lsattutor #lsatprep #lsat2019 #disabilityawareness #disabled #accommodation #accommodations #disabilitylaw #highereducation #lawyer #attorney #leveltheplayingfield #add #adhd #adhdproblems #cognitivebehavioraltherapy #teachersofinstagram #teacher #onlinetutoring

This building was too tall for my lens. And I think I was too stubborn/lazy to switch out lenses. So I had to learn that lesson the hard way. It’s pretty cool how you can have a broader view with one lens or a very narrowed, close-up version with another lens. It’s a good reminder for me that there is value in both views. Sometimes it’s important to be focused in on one thing and not paying attention to anything else. It’s also important to know when to expand your perspective.

#truth . . . You never know someone's past or traumas. . . . Ive always had to be older than my age because my parents weren't around enough, so I had to learn to look after myself and I've had some traumatic experiences from a young age. Which I guess just forces you to be emotionally mature compared to others the same age. . . . And it's still true to this day. . . . The way I think differently has also added to the issues I have making friends because I tend to not understand most people's lives and they don't understand mine. . . . Sometimes we just can't relate. . . . But I'm proud of who I am, how far I've come and what I've learnt from what I've gone through. . . . I hope your are too. . . . #truth . . . I'm not perfect, no where near it. But I am trying everyday to be better and I am seeing progress. . . . I am able to listen better during an argument or if someone has an issue. I try to listen and deal with it or be supportive. . . . But I've noticed that if I tell certain people they've upset me, or hurt me they will find a way to blame me for the way they treat me. . . . It happens a lot and maybe sometimes it can be true. Maybe I've done something first without realising and someone's is reacting to me. . . . But it can't be every time I get disrespected by someone. Sometimes it is their responsibilities and their emotional actions. . . . So yeah I do find it annoying to be always told that the reason some is rude to me, ignores me or is incredible short with me that it's always because of the person I am. . . . The reason I don't believe it all the time is now I'm progressing I try to have a good understanding of when I'm in the right or wrong and I try to take the most responsibility I can for when I'm wrong and when I'm not in the wrong I'll stick up for myself now. . . .
