@tehminakhanwrites tagged me in her #top10unreadbooks and I decided to tweak it a little to showcase the top 10 intimidating reads I have lying around my house. The ones that I want to get around to reading sometime... sometime. 1. Wizard of the Crow by Ngugi Wa Thiong’o - a landmark of postcolonial African Literature. 800 pages. Size intimidation. 2. At the Existentialist Cafe by Sarah Bakewell - Not intimidating as an individual read but I’ve told myself I’ll explore the writings of the major thinkers of the existentialist movement before getting to this. 3. The emperor of all maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee - after working in Cancer research for 7 years, it’s not the subject that intimidates but the dreariness. 4. City of Joy by Dominique Lapierre - Recommended by some of my favorite Bengalis and I’m only hesitating because what if I don’t like the book? 5. Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth - a personal challenge to conquer this book sometime. How can I let a book defeat me? A family saga at that? 6. Man’s Seach for Meaning by Viktor Frankl - a well meaning gift but spiritual lessons from Nazi camp.. I need more time to get to it. 7. From Dawn to Decadence by Jacques Barzun - Another highly recommended gift, but the size, the subject, the font.. ugh! 8. Les Mis - because: Les Mis. 9. Wuthering Heights - pink, pretty and small. But I’ve heard horror tales of unrelenting darkness between the covers. 10. Ulysses - The mother of all intimidating reads. One of the few books to make it to my bucket list. Just writing about these books is exhausting, phew:) #intimidatingreads #jamesjoyce #ulysses #lesmis #victorhugo #wutheringheights #emilybronte #suitableboy #vikramseth #manssearchformeaning #viktorefrankl #fromdawntodecadence #jacquesbarzun #wizardofthecrow #ngugiwathiongo #attheexistentialistcafe #sarahbakewell #emperorofallmaladies #siddharthamukherjee #cityofjoy #dominiquelapierre Tagging - @esoteric_tan , @roshan79 , @chitraahanthem

#dascaféderexistenzialisten #freiheitseinundaprikosencocktails #attheexistentialistcafé #attheexistentialistcafe #freedombeingandapricotcocktails #sarahbakewell #jeanpaulsartre #simonedebeauvoir #martinheidegger #edmundhusserl #mauricemerleauponty #albertcamus #bookstagram #igbooks #igreads #instabooks #instareads #currentlyreading #litterature #literatur #nonfiction #sachbuch #biography #biographie #philosophy #existentialism #bibliophile #bücher #bücherliebe #coffee

My interest in "existentialism", or "phenomenology" really took hold after reading Sarah Bakewell's 'At the Existentialist Cafe' - and what a good book that was. These are probably the two most notable texts from that branch of philosophy: 'Being and Time' by Martin Heidegger and 'Being and Nothingness' by Jean-Paul Sartre. I'm almost halfway through Being and Time right now and Being and Nothingness will follow after I'm done. Not sure if I'm understanding all of Heidegger...actually I'm positive I'm not lol, but at least I can pretend. Who knew so much could be written about 'Being', or "Daesin" as it were. Philosophy is good for the soul. #book #books #read #reading #philosophy #existentialism #phenomenology #ontology #being #daesin #philosopher #philosophers #philosophizing #knowledge #knowledgeispower #existentialist #cafe #attheexistentialistcafe #beingandtime #beingandnothingness #time #nothingness #goodreads #bookstagram #bookshelf

Was soll ich also sagen?! NOWA RECENZJA i KONKURS. In July I spent two weeks in France with my wife Ioanna and my daughter Cybele. Most of this time was in Paris, a city I've become somewhat familiar with over the years. 🌻🌻🌻 When I was there, I began reading this book by Sarah Bakewell, an English author only six years my elder, who predictably enough also became familiar with existentialism a bit earlier than me - she was 16, I was 19. We were both, as her bio suggests "teenage existentialists". 🌻 🌻 🌻 This book is an excellent introduction to the gallery of thinkers who furnish the walls of this philosophical school - I was tempted to write 'system', but they would probably like that term even less than 'school'. Of course, I chose to take this particular book to Paris, because that's where most of the action takes place. 🌻 🌻 🌻 #heidegger, #sartre, #debeauvoir, #camus, #kierkegaard, #merlauponty, #levinas, #simoneweil and a rich cast of other fascinating characters inhabit the pages of this book, which succeeds at the unlikely feat of having both philosophical integrity and popular appeal. 🌻 🌻 🌻 The reading experience is recommended, and of course enhanced by a walk through the #jardinsduluxembourg or through #stgermaindespres! #attheexistentialistcafe #sarahbakewell #existentialism

. Quelques grands penseurs mentionnés dans cet ouvrage : Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Emmanuel Levinas, Albert Camus... . #aucafeexistentialiste #sarahbakewell #editionsalbinmichel #attheexistentialistcafe #le1hebdo

Attempting to understand the Absurd without my head splitting and/or exploding. Like with most philosophers, clarity isn’t Camus’s strong suit - though he does better than most. . . I’ve been fascinated by existentialism for ages, especially since reading Sarah Bakewell’s At The Existentialist Café, and I’ve admired Camus since reading The Plague (which is, in my opinion, better than The Outsider) - so learning more about the Absurd is vital for me. I’m also trying to transfer that method of thought into the protagonist of the novel I’m writing. At the Existentialist Café~ Sarah Bakewell * “Ideas are interesting, but people are vastly more so.” * Sarah Bakewell intertwines the lives and ideas of the existentialists, and their philosophical ancestors, to convey the sense of excitement that this new philosophy once brought about in the cafes. While she can’t take us back to that space, what she can do is make them stand out on their own as people with their own flaws and ideologies who stood for whatever they believed in, and their shortcomings regardless of their brilliance. * It’s a story of Sarte, Beauvior, and Merleau-Ponty, but the cast of characters includes Camus, Baldwin, Arendt, and Wright, as well as numerous men and women who stood by their varying philosophies regardless of their hurdles; they transitioned into ways of being in the world they existed in. Heidegger is a giant and a ghost at the same time, which cannot be redeemed or put to rest –he simply is. Bakewell transitions between them as people and as evolving ideas and depicts the impact of their principles on their personal relationships, and you might find yourself misty eyed at the departures. * I rarely, if ever, want to open up the notes and the references, but with Bakewell seamlessly incorporating texts without making them seem pretentious or like a reading list for a course I actually looked things up to try and read. If you get your hands on this book, which I picked up from @readings.pk (and is also at @thelastwordbks) it’s well worth a read. * #bookstagramofmine #bookgram #readingagain #reads #read #reading #currentread #currentlyreading #justread #bookblog #bookgrammer #bookworm #bookstagram #bookstagrampak #book #bookish #booklove #bookreview #review #greatread #lit #literature #quote #attheexistentialistcafe #sarahbakewell #pakistan #existentialism

Husserl'in, ölümünden sonra akademik mirasının başına geçip fikirlerini devam ettireceğini hayal ettiği Heideggerle yolları nasıl ve neden ayrı düşmüş🤔?
Sartre ve Beauvoir'in ilişkisi nasıl yıllarca sürmüş🤔? Hepsinin cevabı bu kitapta! 🍹

*book review* Satre, Beauvoir, Camus, Heidegger, Husserl, Jaspers, Merleau-Ponty and others feature in this book I've been wading through for a year; finishing feels like a real accomplishment... Imagine having written it! The time it took me to read it is no poor reflection on the writing, just on my ability to take in such a wealth of information. This book is exquisitely written. Bakewell must be highly commended for the extensive research needed to write a book of this scope. It is rich in biographical detail, tales of intrigue, and provides ample discussion on the philosophy of the existentialists and their peers. Reading it has extended my future reading list twofold. This book is a perfect match for any keen student of philosophy, those who are new to philosophy (as I am, aside from one undergrad history course) and those interested in 20th century European history, as this is necessarily and deeply entwined with the biographies of the main cast. #attheexistentialistcafe #freedombeingandapricotcocktails #sarahbakewell #philosophy #biography #nonfiction #jeanpaulsartre #simonedebeauvoir #albertcamus #heidegger #existentialism #existentialists #bookreview #reading #bookstagram #bookclub #whattoread #readmore #lovereading #bookchat #feelingbookish

I've heard good things about this, curious to see if it lives up to its reputation.

I am back home to chilly gray Massachusetts and ready for some deeper reading. I have always enjoyed and been fascinated by Simone De Beauvoir, Albert Camus and their cafe crowd of original thinkers. But quite often books about them are too dense or they focus too much on their messy emotional lives, which were messy! This book is just a perfect balance of exploring their evolving thinking, their philosophies but also their personalities and lifestyles. I am thoroughly enjoying this book. And, as appropriate, reading it in a charming small cafe ☕️🥐🥖 📚📚☕️ #guardianbooks #sarahbakewell #attheexistentialistcafe #simonedebeauvoir #albertcamus #jeanpaulsartre #currentlyreading #existentialism #literarybiography

Sarah Bakewell’s At The Existentialist Cafe is certainly living up to expectations! It gives a great overview of the key ideas involved, and gives a wonderful depth to the philosophers and life events. #bookstagram #philosophy #existentialism #sarahbakewell #attheexistentialistcafe #sartre #camus #simonedebeauvoir #philosopher #igreads #bookworm #beatthisalgorithm #biography #wordpressblogger #blogger

Ah Montaigne! I’m glad I got to know you. You are now officially added to my list of peculiar historical men that fascinate me to no end - alongside Ben Franklin and Teddy Roosevelt. —- He wrote 107 essays with simple titles like “of Friendship”, “of Cannibals”, “of Names” and “of Cripples”. He was an observer of the world but most of all he observed and wrote about himself. —- 📝 He was send out by his parents to be nursed by peasants as an infant in a weird attempt to create a bond with “the commoners” that he would one day need to help. —- 📝 His parents educational experiment continued; Montaigne was brought up as a native Latin speaker! A tough plan to put in practice since the were almost no native latin speakers around. The rest of the household spoke minimal or no Latin. —- 📝 “A man... should touch his wife prudently and soberly, lest if he caresses her too lasciviously the pleasure should transport her outside the bound of reason” Montaigne quoted Aristotle. Saying, basically, the conventional notion in those days that being a passionate husband would turn the wife into a nymphomaniac. 😂 —- 📝 Pay attention! As Montaigne learned, one of the best techniques for paying attention is to write about everything. Just to describe simple things in the world opens your eyes to how marvelous they are. —- 📝 “Still French was his language of choice”. His essays gives a weird reason for this: French could not be expected to last in the same way as the classical languages (I.e. Latin). This was freeing. If his writing was flawed, there was less pressure on him since the where doomed anyway. —— 📝 He was a big fan of Hellenistic philosophy; Stoicism and Skepticism in particular. Stoicism encourages wise detachment and skeptics held themselves back on principle. His motto was “What do I know?”. —— 📝 In “on cripples” Montaigne writes about a rumor that lame women are more enjoyable in bed, and as Aristotle before him, he speculates that it must be that “their vaginas are more muscular because they receive the nourishment of which the legs are deprived.” 😂 —- It’s a fascinating biography even for the uninitiated! Now I just need to read his actual essays! —- 4/5
