What are some things you do to slow down time and be present? Lighting a candle, taking a bath, and putting on headphones and closing my eyes only to focus on a single song are some things that ground me and slow down the time. 🕰 I have my writing class tonight. I haven’t been in the mood to write today (hence the storyboards on my instagram story that are for ANOTHER book I’m working on), but I forced myself to sit down and have written about 1,200 words so far. Hopefully I can write some more before class. 🤞

I give this 3.5 Stars, but just can't go to 4. I read this in one day and it kept my interest, but.... This is a book about group of women who join a mother's club, May Mothers. All of these mothers have just had babies so there's the usual self-absorbed, am I doing this right, judging from outsiders, and of course women issues. During a much-needed night out, one of the babies is taken. Now all their lives are consumed the finding out what happened and where is the baby. In most of the storyline, the book was predictable. It was similar to many lifetime stories you watch and read. The characters are well developed and there is many of them, sometimes confusing. The mom is purposefully undeveloped for suspense. This is a move I liked. I could not tell of I "liked" her or not. As a woman, you've met many of these women in your life. Which in turn, makes the book relatable, except for the kidnapping. Speaking of the kidnapping, while I didn't guess it, when it happened, it reminded me and other stories like it. So I didn't feel very shocked. I enjoyed this quick psychological thriller I recommended if you're looking for a quick Beach read or light read. I am glad I read it before the movie comes out. I am excited to see who they cast. #theperfectmother #aimeemolloy #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #books #mothersclub #woman #booktime #readingbystarlight #bestfriends #womensupportingwomen

Alexander Chee’s How to Write an Autobiographical novel is one of the books that has stuck with me the most from last year. A collection of essays that are part memoir and part treatise on writing, Chee explores his own past through his relationship and romance with writing. Along with Emilie Pine’s Notes to Self, this is not only one of my top two reads from 2018, but also a book I see myself going back to again and again, filling it with post-it bookmarks. . . I find it hardest to review books I like the best, because the reasons I love them are so self-evident and un-explainable once I’ve read the book and sat with it for a while. So all I can say for this book is that I hope you read it and feel this way too. . . 📸 by @markus_serious who fell for my vague rec and bought himself a copy . #bookreview #bookblog #goodreads #currentlyreading #readinggoals #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #alexanderchee #howtowriteanautobiographicalnovel @bloomsburypublishing

Day 21 of #janwriterschallenge is #favouritebook and tomorrow Day 22 is #genre I feel like I'm repeating myself as Day 16 was #favouriteauthor and for me the two go hand in hand. My favourite book is Stray by Rachel Vincent and I've gone on to read many more of her titles. But to mix it up, I decided to look at my Good Reads account and identify the authors I've read the most books by. These are: Catherine Hart - romance author that sneaks in a little paranormal in like psychic dreams, etc Alice Hoffman - paranormal author that is famous for being the author that the movie #practicalmagic is based on. Maria V Snyder -fantasy author that got me hooked on her series and her spin off series. I'm posting this for tomorrows prompt too as I think they are perfect examples of genres I enjoy reading and writing. #urbanfantasy #paranormalromance #fantasy #paranormal There are loads more books and it was really hard to choose. Are any of these your favourites? #writerslife #bookrecommendations #goodreads #rachelvincent #catherinehart #alicehoffman #mariavsnider

📚 This book is so good! It is SO👏🏼GOOD👏🏼 . When I started it last year, I didn’t like Eleanor. She was awkward and off putting and I didn’t understand her personality, so I put the book down. . This time around I pushed through my initial drop off point and was rapidly charmed by Eleanor’s peculiarities. Having suffered a trauma at the age of 10, Eleanor doesn’t understand social norms and has few acquaintances and even fewer friends. She is a creature of habit and says whatever is on her mind without thinking twice. . One thing that stood out to me about the author’s writing is how foreboding Eleanor’s mummy is even though we only meet her in weekly calls. She reminded me of the mother in Sharp Objects. . I won’t spoil it, but I LOVED the ending. ♥️ 5/5 Stars for Eleanor Oliphant! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌟 . . . 🙎🏻‍♀️ There are scars on my heart, just as thick, as disfiguring as those on my face. I know they’re there. I hope some undamaged tissue remains, a patch through which love can come in and flow out. I hope. . 🙎🏻‍♀️ I’m no epicure; however, surely it is a culinary truth universally acknowledged that fish and cheese do not go together? Someone really ought to tell Mr. McDonald. . 🙎🏻‍♀️ In principle and reality, libraries are life-enhancing palaces of wonder. . 🙎🏻‍♀️LOL could go and take a running jump. I wasn’t made for illiteracy; it simply didn’t come naturally. . 🙎🏻‍♀️These days, loneliness is the new cancer – a shameful, embarrassing thing, brought upon yourself in some obscure way. A fearful, incurable thing, so horrifying that you dare not mention it; other people don’t want to hear the word spoken aloud for fear that they might too be afflicted, or that it might tempt fate into visiting a similar horror upon them. . . ♥️📚3️⃣ . #eleanoroliphantiscompletelyfine #gailhoneyman #fiction #keepreading #booksof2019 #bookjourney #readersareleaders #diversereads #windowsandmirrors #ilovereading #readlikeagirl #teacherreader #girlswhoread #bookreviews #bookrecommendations #booklove #literacymatters #readstagram #bookstagram #bookadventures #readinggoals #readmore #learnmore #readeverything #reading #heatherinareads

📚: That Kind of Mother by Rumaan Alam ☕️: Grandmother’s collection As someone who was born into an interracial family, I appreciate any story that discusses the intricacies of blending different cultures, languages, and skin colors into what is supposed to be a single, cohesive unit. How can you be united when the outside only sees what separates you? How can you protect your child from prejudices you never had to face? How can you ensure that your child is equally connected to all of their roots? This book, about a white woman who adopts her black nanny’s baby, attempts to address these issues in the context of motherhood specifically and Alam does it with language that is descriptive without being flowery. It was powerful and comforting to see the insecurities I had growing up and the concerns I have for the future written in such plain language. The protagonist was not always likable (she could be selfish and self-absorbed), but she was put in situations that brought back memories from my own life, and she handled them in a real way; that is to say, not perfectly. For example, in one scene, she goes to pick up her black “niece” from daycare and is refused because she is not listed as a guardian. While it’s a perfectly logical and objective reason to deny anyone access to a child, the protagonist reacts emotionally—focusing on the idea that she is being denied because the administrator says she “can’t see” how the protagonist can be related to the child. Really, the one problem I had was that the protagonist failed to overcome her initial naïveté and childlike understanding of race. Because the rest of the book felt so honest, her lack of growth left me feeling unsettled—but maybe that was Alam’s intent. The book ends with her saying that the world in 1999 has become a place where her white and black sons can both be treated equally, but we know that’s not true—in large part because she doesn’t do it herself and she isn’t honest with herself about her understanding of race. There’s a larger metaphor there for race relations generally, and it’s one that kept me thinking for hours after I turned the last page.

#review . Elevation by Stephen King . Set in Castle Rock, this novella tells the story of Scott Carey who begins to steadily lose weight, without his body changing shape. . The premise of Elevation was really interesting, and while the premise could stand on its own as a ‘body horror’ type story, I feel as a whole, King is using the storyline as a reflection of Scott’s inner thoughts, particularly in a time of a changing political landscape. As Scott begins to become more and more accepting to these changes, we see the weight steadily drop, which I think epitomised the ‘weight off your shoulders’ saying. . I think what King did well here was find a really interesting tone for the novella. I think it showed good restraint, he could have easily fallen down the ‘body horror’ hole, but instead told a story which had A LOT OF HEART, with great characters, who underwent a character arc, and changed from the start of story, something I think is hard to accomplish over 170 pages. . Don’t go into this expecting a classic King horror story, it’s not that. It is King playing with genre in an interesting way, to tell a story that is really universal at this time. . 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ . . . . . . #bookstagram #stephenking #horrorbooks #constantreader #bookstagrammer #elevation #reading #igreads #horror #stephenkingbooks #booklove #bookrecommendations #bookreview #lovebooks

*Sigh* Such a relaxing day. It’s suuuuper cold here in Virginia Beach so it’s a day of blankets, heating pads, my owl pjs and snuggles. I had spa treatments this morning (@laurenslathers and I trade services...her spa treatments for my freezer meal service) and then have lazed around for hours reading this book because i felt so incredibly relaxed. I started and finished this short book today ☺️ . . This book was ok...not amazing or earth-shattering, but interesting. The first half was a bunch of research about how damaging to our attention span and mental health tons of time on our phones/social media can be. I think most of us are fully aware of that. The second half was actual steps for how to be wiser with your smartphone. Examples were removing apps, installing monitoring apps, disabling notifications, and planning phone fasts. Good suggestions and I don’t feel like I wasted time reading this....but I’m not sure I’d give it a hearty recommendation ☺️ . #read #reader #reading #readersareleaders #readermom #readerlife #readeveryday #readeverything #readersofinstagram #winterreading #book #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookgirl #bookmom #booklife #bookish #bookworm #booknerd #booklover #bookaddict #bookaddiction #technologybooks #librarybooks #bookreview #bookrecommendations #instabooks #book16of2019

I’m halfway through @michelleobama book “Becoming” and I’m quite amazed at how much I can relate to what she was going through at certain times in her life. #bookreview UPROOTED by #naominovik ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨🤷‍♀️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🤷‍♀️ 3.5-4. Here’s why. I listened on audible and the narrator was terrible. Note to self, always listen to a book sample. The book was also at least three hours too long and there was completely unnecessary “romance”. Despite those things it was a great book full of imagination! I thought it might be a fairy tale “remake” but it wasn’t and definitely stood on its own two feet. I really enjoyed the heroine and how they described her magic compared to the other wizard magic. It was very thoughtful. Worth the read if you enjoy magical books. Just don’t get the audiobook! What did you think? Don’t usually go public on book recommendations, but this was an exceptional read! I love how real and authentic @rachelheldevans is with her journey of faith. I admire her courage to confront, and interact with some of the most challenging topics and questions that most of us either dismiss, or hide under the rug. So much of her journey, I could relate to my own, which made this read extra powerful for me. I sooo recommend everyone get their hands on this book. #inspired #bookrecommendations #faith

Happy Monday! Tomorrow (I had mentioned Friday, but I moved it to Tuesday) I will be starting a series of posts in which I interview other IG friends and we’ll have a conversation about books and the art of reading. They’ll give us #bookrecommendations #readinglists , take us down literary memory lane and give us a mini tour of their bookshelves as well! These posts will be tagged #fromthelibraryof and will be saved in my stories’ highlights for easy browsing. I hope you’ll enjoy reading through these as much as I have!

📖Book Review The Trumpet of Conscience by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. . . My coworker recommended this beautiful collection of lectures by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., sometime last year. I decided to spend the morning reading and reflecting. Ironically, this also was one of my #2booksunder50reviews curated by @reggiereads! In 1967, months before King was murdered, he delivered 5 lectures for the Massey Lecture Series of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. As I sat pouring over these lectures, I realized many of the struggles and sentiments spilled onto these pages, still resonate today. . . The lectures touch on the Civil Rights Movement during the mid 50-60’s, the United States involvement in the Vietnam war (which by this point, King had publicly spoken against), Faith and alternative routes, violence, and the everlasting struggles to freedom and liberation. Collectively, these lectures intersect in a fluid/cohesive manner, while each individually stand alone, firm in their messages. This was a quick read, but one that deserves nurture and reflective thought. . . “When culture is degraded and vulgarity enthroned, when the social system does not build security but induces peril, inexorably the individual is impelled to pull away from a soulless society. This process produces alienation-perhaps the most pervasive and insidious development in contemporary society” page 44. . . . #thetrumpetofconscience #drmartinlutherkingjr #mlk #mlkspeeches #reflection #racismpovertyandwar #bookstagram #blackwomenread #bookcommunity #blackbookstagram #wellreadblackgirls #bookrecommendations #bookreview

Today's interview is with the fabulous Suzanne Hemming, a mum of one and Children's Author at @theachopsbooks Suzanne spoke to us about her daughter's favourite titles, why she loves illustrations by @jacquie_hughes and how she's on a mission to make children's books more diverse and inclusive. To date she has published two books and is currently working on her third.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars for The Last Year of the War by Susan Meissner . . To Be Published: March 19, 2019 . . I won this book for free through #goodreadsgiveaways. Thank you to @Goodreads, Berkley, and Susan Meissner for an ARC copy. As always, an honest review from me. . . Like: - Alternates between present day and WWII featuring the same characters helps to enhance the story - The shared friendship between Elise and Mariko - seamlessly ties the whole story together, even when they’re living on different continents - The parents caring for their children during very difficult times Love: - The realism and beauty of the writing - We get a more personal complete perspective of the war from the view of a teenager - The main characters: Elise, her family, Mariko, and the Dove family - Even though it’s fiction I learned more about WWII, especially the experiences of average citizens in the U.S. and Germany - Completely transports me to a different time and place Dislike: - The sadness, violence and mistreatment of people, even though its realistic to the events in history Wish that: - The character of Max was mentioned more and also more likable Overall, a wonderful historical fiction novel that tells the tale of two American teenagers who met due to fear an assumptions from the government and changed each others lives forever. Definitely, definitely recommend . . Like my #bookreview and more content like this? . Go check out my blog! . 📚Link in Bio📚

excuse my poor editing skills 🤷🏻‍♀️ any who, scroll down a lil to find out my ratings on “The Distance Between Us,” and what it’s about • • • • • • • Money Can’t Buy A Good First Impression. ••••••••••••••••••••• “The Distance Between Us,” is about Caymen Meyers, A seventeen year old girl whom was brought up to believe the rich could not be trusted. After years of studying them behind a cash register of her mom’s porcelain-doll shop, she has seen nothing to prove otherwise. Enter Xander Spence——he’s tall, handsome, and oozing rich. Despite his charming ways and the fact that he seems to be one of the first people who actually gets her, she’s smart enough to know his interest won’t last. Because if there’s one thing she’s learned from her mother’s warnings, it’s that the rich have a short attention span. But just when Xander’s loyalty and attentiveness are about to convince Caymen that being rich isn’t a character flaw, she finds out that money is a much bigger part of their relationship than she’d ever realized. With so many obstacles standing in their way, can she close the distance between them? ••••••••••••••••• I personally rate this book a 10/10 for anyone who’s wanting a good romance with a wee bit of drama thrown in. #bookrecommendations #bookstagram #books #book #bookclub

Moonlight: a book recommend & swipe for my lunar eclipse pics. If there's ever a celestial event where I live, I can usually count on a cloud cover, so I didn't expect much from last night's Super Blood Wolf Moon Lunar Eclipse. The first moon photo was taken an hour before the eclipse was due. Clouds as expected, but the moon was out, oh my gosh, there was hope. Before I went inside, big dark clouds were encroaching and I shook my fist - "No, no!" But I had an hour. Viewing the eclipse was still a slight possibility. The time came and I hurried out. The moon was gone. The clouds won. I went inside and had my own eclipse, a Radius Eclipse, a dark red wine blend from California, which was quite tasty. I took my dog out an hour or so after the event, and there it was, framed by our cedars, the moon shining bold and bright. . Book recommend: "Moonlight on the Avenue of Faith" by Gina B Nahai. "When she is 5 years old, Lili, the narrator, watches her mother, Roxanna the Angel, throw herself off the balcony of their house on the Avenue of Faith. Roxanna has left no farewell, no explanation. Her family's subsequent search for her reveals no body, no sign of a fall, no trace of an escape. The only witness to Roxanna's disappearance, Lili, will spend the next 13 years looking for her mother, wondering if she is alive, wondering why she left." (blurb from publisher) I read this several years ago and enjoyed it so much. And of course I'm reading this. I remember listening to Michelle Obamas speech at the DNC and I was raptured by her story. She was talking about the men in her life; what it meant to be a man to her father and her husband. In a world where men can deeply harm women, knowingly and unknowingly, it was uplifting to hear another woman's account of how men rose up to be better for their women. In particularly from those with power. #whatimreading #bookrecommendations  #reading #portraits #portraitphotography #portrait_vision #portraitstream #portraitmode #portraiture #portrait_ig #readinglist #reading #bookstagram #book #books #bookshelf #bookclub #bookish #bookworm #bookaholic #bookphotography #booking #booknerd #booklover #booksofinstagram #bookporn #michelleobama #becomingmichelleobama #blue

Happy Monday y'all! So I have started a bookclub with @missbfodale where we are going to read a book that has a corresponding movie, and then drink and discuss the book and watch the movie. This month's book, of my choosing, was Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie. It was just ok, to be quite frank. The main character, Poirot, was a bit Sherlock Holmes-y, but he was also vague and condescending. Also, I get that it was written in a different time, but my god this book was racist. It used the slur w*p in reference to an Italian man, whom they were generally calling a savage the whole time, and a few other things. A lot of exoticism, which if not a word already should be a word to brand this particular kind of covert racism. In any case, the ending was actually quite good. I didn't see it coming until a few more secrets were revealed. So there you go, it had its ups and downs, but it left an over all, meh impression. I am told though, that the other books without Poirot in it are quite good, so maybe I'll read that one day.

Happy Monday! . . 🇬🇧Another sweet little book by Meik Wiking and a total must read if you're in the mood for something more inspirational. I always think this is the perfect read for the beginning of the year. I'm reading Throne of Glass at the moment and the weather in Portugal is calling for books, coffee and chill. . . . . I have really grown to love detective thrillers over the last year so when I heard #tanafrench recommended on the #whatshouldireadnext podcast I was eager to pick up In the Woods which is the first book written in the Dublin Murder Squad series. 💙💜 I have to admit that I didn't love this book. I gave it 3 🌟 s on #goodreads . I didn't like the detective who was telling the story partly because I didn't find him and his decisions quite believable. He and his partner seemed like smart, elite professionals so their stupid decisions seemed contrived for the plot. On the other hand, Tana French is a good writer and the story was engaging so I am going to go ahead and read The Likeness this year? 💙💛 Have you read this series? Is it worth continuing? Do you think it gets better? #bookstagram #bookish #booksofinstagram #bookreview #bookrecommendations #booklover #bookworm #readersofinstagram #ilovereading #mysterybooks

Hey, guys! I hear art tips are well received on the Internet, so here’s a book I’ve been finding SUPER useful for understanding and improving my anatomy! I think I’m only 20 pages into this VERY thick book, and my drawings have already improved so much! It does a good job of breaking down the body area by area, and explains how muscles interlock and attach to the skeleton. I highly recommend it! . . . #art #artistsoninstagram #anatomy #bookrecommendations #artresources

📕 Indira - #sagarikaghose This was one of my favorite reads from #2018. I loved it so much, I read it twice cover to cover. It made me obsess over the #nehrufamily and I just couldn't stop deep diving into their rich political and personal history. Maybe this child like curiosity was also fueled by the fact that I share my birthday with #indiragandhi. The book has some flaws because the author tends to exaggerate and speculate unnecessarily. Despite that, the book is vibrant with details and very very fast. It explores her childhood and marriage with a kind of incision, that you might just imagine yourself at Anand Bhavan in Allahabad. It also has a extensive account of her triumph of the 1971 war and the disaster of the all India Emergency. The most impactful part of the book for me, is way her assassination has been recounted. -- #bookworm #bookshelf #book #bookobsessed #bookstagram #bookclub #bookaholics #bookish #books #quotestoliveby #quotesdaily #quotesaboutlife #quotes #quotestoremember #literaryquotes #literature #literaturequotes #indiragandhi #politics #biography #bookrecommendations #review #bookreview

First read of the new year! 📖 On a day that we celebrate the life of a man who gave his life for the peaceful resolution of conflict, it’s one that I highly recommend. It has given me a unique perspective on my own attitudes, assumptions, and judgements and how they affect the way I view the stories of myself and others. #happymlkday #bookrecommendations #theanatomyofpeace

I’ve somehow not read a book this year, well not managed to finish one. I realise we haven’t finished January yet. Somehow 🤷🏻‍♀️... why is January always so long? Anyway, I started on Fearne Cotton’s “Calm” but wasn’t feeling it. I then picked up one from the charity shop and it was a little bit more mushy than I was expecting 🙄 (as in I wasn’t expecting it at all) and I just can’t with that. So, this is what I picked up in Tesco yesterday. A couple to learn from. And a couple of stories. And at least two are on my ever expanding booklist 🤦🏻‍♀️ This should keep me going for the next few weeks. Maybe longer if I keep falling asleep so early 😂 8pm last night 😬 Please tell me I’ve picked a few good ones out 🙏🏻 I know “Sapiens” is Instagram recommend 😂 and I’m pretty excited about finally picking it up!

Today’s #martinlutherkingjrday! And even though we have so much further to go we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him. . Today I wanna take the time and honor these three author. I’m so glad Angie Thomas, Nic Stone and Reni Eddo-Lodge help put awareness to this deep rooted issue of racial profiling and racism in the world. I hope one day that more fiction and non-fiction books about racial issues will be apart of the school curriculum. . I feel so overwhelmed and heartbroken when I think to long about it. It’s no secret that people of color get scrutinized everyday. They are racially profiled, less chance of probation, which equals longer sentences, poor neighborhoods, bad schools, homelessness. Without a home you can’t get a job and without a job you can’t get insurance. They are more likely to be pulled over by the police and shot. The list goes on! Affirmative action and Jim Crow laws are a step in the right direction, but it’s not nearly enough. . What I found very interesting with these books are that not only do we get a truthful look into the racial discrimination in today’s world, but also the mindset that some individuals in the black community have about themselves and other people of color. . All I want is for you to pick up these three books and read them. It’s truly an eye opener of how much harder we have to work to make a better life for the future. Happy #mlkday

Audio book review 🔉 I listened to this book a while ago and realized that I hadn't reviewed it yet, so here goes.. As a fan of Trevor Noah, I went in wanting to like this book, and was glad to find it didn't disappoint. Genuine, heart-warming, and heartbreaking, it takes you on a journey through a childhood in South Africa with one of the most brutal regimes it has known as a backdrop. Yet it remains humorous and warm. My favorite part? Trevor's mom. A truly badass woman and an inspiration. Trevor's delivery is smooth and spot on. He maintains his comedic timing and really pulls you in with his accents and variations in tone. I rate it 5/5 🌟 and definitely recommend that you check it out . . . #badeditions #bookstagram #bookshelf #bookreviews #bookblogger #bookworm #bookfavs #bookrecommendations #audiobook #audiobooklove #audible #audiobookreview #bornacrime #trevornoah

Happy MLK day! Reading Coretta Scott King’s amazing memoir, My Life, My Love, My Legacy. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” -MLK

The week before last, we went to see the ballet of Cinderella and it was magical. But we also believe in a “power to the princess” attitude where little girls can solve their own problems without a prince or even a fairy godmother (though thank goodness for Grandmothers otherwise we never would have made it to the ballet!). And this lovely book is a completely new take on the story! It tells the story one brave girl solving her own problems, starting her own adventure in the process, and getting a lot more than courage in the end. Based on emotional developmental milestones, Cinderella is a revised classic for modern children starring a role model that reflects them - little girls (or boys). And that will build their confidence no end! This version of the fairytale differs more from the original than many other retellings I’ve read but in doing so it really modernises the story. Cinderella, feeling left out, runs away from her stepsisters and learns a few lessons along the way coming home again to tell them how they made her feel and finding a new bond they become a family that lives happily ever after. The illustrations are soft and gentle and depict the storytelling beautifully! (Sent by the publisher for review.)
