The "fascination in what's difficult" is a high form of play. - Think about it; exercise, starting a business, or summiting a mountain are all examples of voluntary challenges. It's really not necessary to put ourselves through such acute stress. - But to those that are capable.... What better form of play than a nice challenge ☺️⛰💪 - PS - Dont Hassel the Hoff - #14ers #co14ers

Tuning Fork (Y couloir) of Torreys Peak as seen from Mt Sniktau. Tuning Fork is one of the longest continuous lines off a 14er to ski (about 3,500 ft when it’s fully in) and basically looks like this every year which is why it’s so popular. In case you missed it, check out my new video on our trip up Tuning Fork. Speaking of missed it - it appears that many of you are not seeing my posts anymore so if anyone has tips to get past this bananaland algorithm, drop them in the comments.

And today was a big one. The biggest in Colorado, in fact. And, for me, the one that started so many positive things in my life. . Five years ago, minus one week, I climbed Mt. Elbert on what seemed like a whim. I had tried and failed to summit a couple high peaks in New Mexico at that point, and that was the extent of my peak climbing experience. But that day the weather was kind, and I pushed myself harder than I ever had to reach the summit. Mom was there, too. . That experience changed me forever. I worked hard over the next year, started running and exercising regularly, and lost around 40 pounds. I came back the next summer and summited seven more. Since then I’ve climbed nearly half of CO’s highest 100 peaks. . I’ve repeated a few. Today’s will always be the most significant because this incredibly wonderful girl came out west to do this with me. And she climbed this peak with so much more grace than I did my first time. I’m so proud, so happy, and so filled with love. . For more on this beautiful hike, please check out my story. ❤️ . #mtelbert #mountelbert #sawatchrange #rockymountains #mountainclimbing #mountainhiking #hiking #hikingadventures #14ers #co14ers #colorado14ers #coupleswhohike

Very fulfilling to complete a peak I had to turn back from last September. My good friend and climbing partner, Sheryl and I completed Wilson Peak this afternoon, also known as the Coors mountain. Here’s some pics of our adventure: 1. Arriving at the trailhead for Wilson Peak just outside of Telluride. 2. Lurking around Ralph Lauren’s ranch in Ridgway, Colorado. 3. My favorite flower: the Indian Paintbrush, blooming in abundance. 4. The fire we started solely to keep mosquitos away (they’re bad this year, folks). 5. Wilson Peak and neighboring mountains at sunset. 6. Real mountaineering! Ice axes, microspikes, glissading, climbing, you name it, we did it all. Hope you enjoy! Now I’m going to go sleep forever. #summitsummer #co14ers #colorado #telluride

Mount Princeton; 14,197ft. (31/58) 🏔✨ || I told everyone I was going to use my pseudo day off to rest my leg, drive to a lake and hammock. I meant it, I believed it, but somehow I still found myself at the Mt Princeton trailhead at 2AM sleeping in my car and then wa(l)king up at 5AM. I honestly don’t know if I expected to summit, but here I am on my 31st mountain > 14,000ft. It hurt like hell but that smile rarely disappeared — my compass still points up and 14kft still feels like home after nine months. It might be cheesy, but I cried on the hike down thinking about all of the mountains my body got my broken heart up last summer. I’m pretty sure my heart got my broken body up this one. ♥️

What’s your favorite season for hiking 14ers? If you enjoy the short wildflower growing season, now is a great time to get into the alpine!

Heading into the jaws of life. Sawtooth is your direct path to Mt Evans from Mt Bierstadt or Vice-versa. We just made our way to Bierstadt. We made summit in 2hrs 20min - although we didn't get to enjoy the summit at all - we made it then had to come straight down because of rain and graupel It really is amazing how fast the weather changes up at these parts. I’m starting to think I should’ve majored in astronomy.

"The Lord wraps himself in light as with a garment; He stretches out the heavens like a tent, and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds his Chariot, and rides on the wings of the wind. He makes winds his Messengers, flames of fire his servants. He set the Earth on its foundations, it can never be moved." The tale of the unclimbed 14er; a humble lesson that I learned this past weekend: On Friday my amazing coworkers, who I also call my very good friends and our spouses made the drive to Leadville to stay the night to venture up Mount Elbert on Saturday morning. Coming into this weekend I was nursing a lower back injury that was still causing me trouble, but I was determined that I was still going to climb that mountain. Starting into the hike I could immediately feel my back tense up, about 2 miles into the hike (almost to tree line) my back was causing me a lot of trouble. I took some Tylenol and pushed on. I have done a 14er before so I knew I could do it and that I just needed to push past the pain- so to speak. Over the next hour and a half as we made our way above tree line hiking got harder and harder- every step was painful- not from altitude or lack of oxygen, I felt great in that regard, but my back was killing me. At about 13,000 feet, just before the first false summit, I made a very difficult decision. I turned around. I sat at 13,000 feet for about 20 minutes going back and forth with myself, there were tears & uncertainty if I was making the right choice. I felt weak and I felt defeated. My friends continued up the mountain. My gracious and extremely patient husband and I headed back down the mountain. I was extremely humbled. We made our way down & when we got back to the Jeep I knew I made the right decision. The pain and muscle spasms were severe. I know that I will climb that mountain, but the most important thing is- listen to your body! Try to push but listen to what your body is telling you. Take care of your body! On Monday I went to the doc & Chiro- it turns out I have some pretty serious things going on in my back. So moving forward I will be focusing on functional movements, yoga and continuing to move my body outside appreciating mother nature’s beauty. I share this- not because it’s easy, it still is very sad & humbling that I didn’t make it up, but I want to share the hard. • Shoutout to @craftinurpants for being the most supportive & affirming human I know. I love you more than words can describe.

Indie made a friend this past weekend 🐐 This goat just casually walked by us on the trail, and several people commented on how well behaved Indie was while she just sat there watching it do its thing. Later in the day I saw a 20 pound dog chase a full grown mountain goat for at least a quarter mile straight off a cliff, and I honestly thought the dog was going to go with it. I won’t get into how dangerous that is, but I will say my appreciation for ecollars is reaffirmed daily #balancedtraining #offleash #co14ers #wildlifeonearth #dogsofinstagram #mountaingoat

Climbing Mt. of the Holy Cross yesterday concluded my journey to the summits of all the Sawatch 14ers. This mountain range gives me a true sense of HOME. Many people I meet on the trail are always surprised to learn that I’m not a Colorado native. I’d give anything to claim that status FOR SURE! I FINALLY got my chance to visit the Colorado mountains the summer before my freshman year of high school. My family ventured to Buena Vista from the flatlands of Wisconsin for a summer vacation. We climbed La Plata Peak, my very first 14er! I was in AWE. I absolutely fell in love with Colorado on that trip, and I longed to climb another mountain ever since that amazing day. A dream came true for me when family later relocated to Colorado and built a house at the base of Mt. Princeton in Buena Vista. I completed my senior year at Buena Vista High School--my favorite school year by far! I am now living at 10,200 feet in Leadville, practically at the base of Mt. Elbert, which is another Sawatch 14er (the highest peak in CO/second highest in the continental U.S.) I have definitely found my right place. I’ve never felt more at HOME than I do here in Colorado... and it all began in the Sawatch mountains❤️ Pictured above is my sister @mollyahammond and me on top of La Plata Peak. Swipe right to see more pictures from my adventures to the top of all the Sawatch 14ers!

For the longest time when running the YouTube channel, I debated about putting up a hike where I didn’t summit. Ultimately, I decided that it’s important to show the failures along with the success because if I didn’t - I wouldn’t be painting an accurate picture of what it’s like to be in the mountains on a weekly basis. This week features a hike up the Tuning Fork Couloir of Torreys Peak. While we didn’t summit, like any failure, we learned a lot of lessons that will translate to the next trip out. Link in my bio to hear the full story and hey, still got a few nice turns in 🏂 (during July nonetheless!)
