⠀ https://nyti.ms/2MkMPWt ⠀ Repost @nytimes ⠀ Hesham al-Omaisi, a Yemeni asylum seeker, preparing dinner at a guesthouse in Jeju, a resort island in South Korea. Jeju has been receiving a new type of visitor — asylum seekers fleeing the catastrophe in Yemen. When @airasia began running direct budget flights from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Jeju in December, the island caught the attention of Yemeni asylum seekers. In the first 5 months of this year, 561 Yemenis arrived, up from 51 in 2017. “Jeju was our best option,” said Jamal Nasiri, a former agricultural official in Yemen. “We think about our future, how to keep our children safe and send them to school for a better life, because we are humans.” Migrants like Jamal and Hesham expected a warm welcome in Jeju. But their arrival has created a wave of opposition, leading to what’s considered South Korea’s first organized anti-asylum movement. Taken aback by the reaction, President Moon Jae-in — himself a son of wartime refugees from North Korea — has vowed to revise the laws to tighten screening of refugee applicants. @junmichaelpark took this photo on the island of Jeju.

Syrian and Palestinian children who could not enroll in school, studying at Al Nour center for alternative education in Bourj El Barajne Camp - Beirut. They are so eager to learn. It’s sad how wealth is divided, it’s sad that their reality is a concrete jungle with electric wires everywhere, no infrastructure, no trees, no clean water and no safety. Whenever I complain about my life, I feel so small. I am so blessed to do what I do for a living. I am blessed that my work has not blinded me away from the truth. The first step to helping, is knowing. Now you know :) .. #inspiration #everydayrefugees #picoftheday #childrenof_instagram #humanrights #earlychildhoodeducation #righttolearn #beirut #humansoftheworld

We have been experiencing so many different emotions that I don’t really know what to process them all. The beauty and poverty of #southafrica, the progressive #joburg and the disadvantaged townships, African heat with powerful thunderstorms. Two different worlds in one place, yet one side can only dream of what the other has. #dailyprayer @pfp4sa @photographerswithoutborders #pwb2018 #pwbsouthafrica

Romida Begum is 18 years old. Romida comes from a family of tailors. Since moving to the camp, she has decided to share her talent with the community, teaching other women how to sew. On the day of the interview, she was preparing a dress for a neighbor while her husband attended a funeral. At eight months pregnant and with her 3-year-old daughter, her days are packed with sewing lessons, food preparation, and a number of other chores. “The sewing machine is more than just a tool to make clothes,” she says. “For me, it’s a way to give back to my community during these difficult times.” . . My mentor @hiphopsaveslives and I stand with SHELIA! She is the 3rd person from South Sudan we interviewed for the REFUGEES WELCOME project. I had the privlage of recordong the verse on the song that is about her life story, and had the pleasure of being able to rap to her in the studio😱❗️ We met back with Sheila to learn more about her. She is in a very desperate situation, living in Kampala alone working to send money to her Mom, daughter, younger brother and her two nieces because her sister passed. She’s only 23, taking care of 5 family members she doesn’t even get to see because they live a 16 hour bus ride away in a refugee camp where food given is just not enough. She said some days I don’t have money to eat. @hiphopsaveslives and @therealgxnzo decided we want to move Shelia BACK to her family! we decided to find a house for them and help her start a small business she can run to take care of her family. Shelia was crying tears of joy! This weekend @hiphopsaveslives and I travel with Sheila 16 hours to meet her family and start looking for houses but we need support. Anyone who desires to HELP, PLEASE find it in your HEART to give to Sheila to REUNITE WITH HER FAMILY AND RENT A HOUSE. Donations can be sent through My go fund me link which is in BIO or via venmo @gonzotimeless or through Cash App @realgxnzo thank you for your support and love❤️💫 #timeless “We dont waste time we make it” #spreadlove #timelessnpo #hiphopsaveslives #gxnzo #muzungu #kampala #eastafrica #africa #uganda #ugandamusic #eastafricantour #favoritemuzungu #predictyourfuture #keepmovingfoward #internationaltouringartist #everydayrefugees #worldwideartistsdirectory #worldtraveler🌎 #refugeeswelcome #cantstopgang

Lesvos has a LONG history of welcoming refugees. For centuries, displaced people have arrived on the shores of the island. Lesvos is just miles away from Turkey, making it the easiest and most accessible point for many to get to Europe. After the First World War, over 1 million refugees arrived in Lesvos, and today, many Lesvosian residents’ parents, grandparents, or great grandparents were refugees. That’s not even counting the current refugees. For an island so historically saturated with migration, the conditions and current treatment of refugees must drastically improve to become not only humane and dignified, but one of empathy, understanding, fellowship, hope. // Inside Moira’s Mental Health Crisis - link in bio. Happy International Day of Rural Women! Many women resettled in Philadelphia come from rural communities and agrarian economies. Philly can be a tough transition. But they make-do with what they’ve got, and turn their concrete-slabbed backyards into verdant jungles of produce and flowers🍅🌼🌾 New podcast episode coming this week!
