The Godfather (1972), directed by Francis Ford Coppola. #cinematographer: Gordon Willis

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) • Director - Martin McDonagh Screenplay - Martin McDonagh Cast - Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Peter Dinklage, Abbie Cornish, Caleb Landry Jones, and Lucas Hedges • “My Darling Anne, There's a longer letter in the dresser drawer I've been writing for the last week or so, that one covers us, and my memories of us, and how much I've always loved you. This one just covers tonight, and more importantly, today. Tonight I have gone out to the horses to end it. I cannot say sorry for the act itself, although I know for a short time you will be angry at me, or even hate me for it. Please don't. This is not a case of, I came in this world alone and I'm goin' out of it alone, or anything dumb like that. I did not come in this world alone, my mom was there. And I am not goin' out of it alone, 'cause you were there, drunk on the couch, making Oscar Wilde cock jokes. No, this is a case, in some senses, of bravery. Not the bravery of facing a bullet down. The next few months of pain would be far harder than that small flash. No, it's the bravery of weighing up the next few months of still being with you, still waking up with you, of playing with the kids... Against the next few months of seeing in your eyes how much my pain is killing you. How my weakened body, as it ebbs away, and you tend to it, are your final and lasting memories of me. I won't have that. Your final memories of me will be us at the riverside, and that dumb fishing game, which I think they cheated at. And me inside of you, and you on top of me... And barely a fleeting thought, of the darkness yet to come. That was the best Anne. A whooole day of not thinking about it. Dwell on this day baby, 'cause it was the best day of my life. Kiss the girls for me, and know that I've always loved you... And maybe I'll see ya again if there's another place, and if there ain't... Well, it's been heaven knowing you. Your Boy, Bill” • this is my favorite Woody Harrelson performance, and he delivers one of my favorite monologues which brought me to tears. this movie portrays drama in such a unique way it’s phenomenal. I just reread it and I teared up

🎥 Elephant (1989, dir. Alan Clarke) In this re-enactment of a series of violent killings in Northern Island, the only languange is killing. No story, no dialogues (except for 3 indistinct lines), no characters, no emotions, just killings. 38 minutes of screentime, 18 killings, all with the same minimalistic, anti-narrative, and anti-entertainment approach. Controversial yet inventive and brave, therefore deemed hugely influential. In short, a masterpiece.

Horror royalty and Hammer alumni Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee reunite for this tale of mad monks, primitive humanoids and bloodthirsty zombies set aboard a train bound for Moscow – all aboard the Horror Express! Renowned anthropologist Saxton (Lee) boards the Trans-Siberian Express with a crate containing the frozen remains of a primitive humanoid which, he believes, may prove to be the missing link in human evolution. But all hell breaks loose when the creature thaws out, turning out to be not quite as dead as once thought! Directed by Spanish filmmaker Eugenio Martin, Horror Express remains one for the most thrilling (and, quite literally!) chilling horror efforts of the early 1970s... #arrowvideo #arrow #arrowbluray #horrorexpress #eugeniomartin #christopherlee #movies #film #cinemalovers #filmbuff #bluray #cinephilia #bluraycollection #moviemania #blurayaddict #moviegeek #blurayjunkie #moviecollection #filmmaking #americancinema #filmlibrary #horrormovies #cultclassic #horrorjunkie #classichorror #bmovie #horrorcollection #cinema #cinephile #cinephilecommunity

Rewatch of Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity. Dare I say it, another modern day masterpiece. A film that defines what cinema is all about as far as I'm concerned. Gravity explores the metaphorical journey of rebirth as we follow Ryan Stone's (Sandra Bullock) attempt to get back to earth through a series of life threatening adversities. While carrying out a routine procedure on the Hubble telescope Ryan Stone and Matt Kowalski (Clooney) are informed that debris from destroyed space craft and satellites is inbound putting them in jeopardy. On the face of it that's the basic story but oh boy it's so much more. Cinema was invented for films like this. Gravity is an edge of the seat thrill ride with groundbreaking special effects, award winning direction, immersive sound design & filmscore and a brilliant emotive central performance from Sandra Bullock. It's unbelievable that Gravity is now 6 years old and it's still as breathtaking as it was on its release. There's not many films that improve when watching in 3D but Gravity is one that undoubtedly does. Watching the film in 3D immerses the viewer in the anti-gravity environment as objects float and zip around you from all angles. The two explosive set pieces are jaw dropping as shrapnel shatters and fragments into tiny pieces from the Explorer space shuttle and the ISS. What gives Gravity depth is the metaphorical imagery as Stone deals with the loss of her young daughter and then her subsequent personal rebirth. Performances are both great from Bullock and Clooney but I have to say I've never seen Bullock any better than here. She exudes almost every emotion in her performance, from panic to sadness to determination to elation. And then to Cuaron's direction and the ability to create an environment using groundbreaking technology which immerses the viewer through absolutely ridiculous camera angles. It's just genius direction! Gravity is a film of many flawless parts and one that I'll revisit many times in years to come. 10/10. #gravity #filmdiary #moviediary #movielog #justwatched #bluraycollection #bluraycollector #blurayaddict #film #filmcollector #filmcollection #filmbuff #movie #moviecollection #moviecollector

Superb doc - I have zero interest in football but this was riveting. As someone who knew nothing about him I found it really fascinating and informative, but of course it’s also very tragic - it’s not surprising really he turned to drugs with all that crazy pressure around him. He was considered a god to a lot of people - quite literally, his picture being put up next to Jesus. The footage is immense - it terms how much we see, they must have dug into every crack to find it. A fascinating, gripping and often sad character study - well worth seeking out. 8/10

Re-watched and introduced @coxd03 to the brilliant and stylish revenge crime thriller from director Kim Jee-woon, A Bittersweet Life. A Bittersweet Life starts off as a crime drama with a bubbling undercurrent of violence which slowly builds and builds to a visceral violent crescendo. Lee Byung-hun plays Sun-woo, a mafia enforcer working for Mr. Kang, under the guise of a hotel manager. Mr. Kang suspects his girlfriend Hee-soo is cheating on him so assigns Sun-woo the task of following her for a few days while he's away on business. Sun-woo is told that if he discovers she is unfaithful that he should 'take care of them'. Sun-woo ultimately makes a decision that will turn the tables on himself. Kim Jee-woon directs the pacing of the film beautifully. You, as a viewer, are slowly but deliberately absorbed into the narrative and feel at times as though you're part of the action thanks to his use of some clever camera angles. Placing fixed cameras on moving vehicles or even Lee Byung-hun as he takes on multiple enemies for example and because the first half of the film is deliberately slow this makes the violence all the more brutal. Fingers are blown off, heads explode and blood pours by the bucket load. Lee Byung-hun is absolutely superb as Sun-woo. Playing him with subtle sensitivity yet you know he's such a bad ass at the same time. Direction of the action by Kim Jee-woon is crafted flawlessly as is the cinematography by Kim Jee-yong. The burial scene in the rain is visually stunning as is the beautifully lit shootout at the end. Basically A Bittersweet Life is a modern day stylish vengeful masterpiece. 10/10. #abittersweetlife #filmdiary #moviediary #movielog #justwatched #bluraycollection #bluraycollector #blurayaddict #film #filmcollector #filmcollection #filmbuff #movie #moviecollection #moviecollector #hometheatre #homecinema #hometheater

Hey, everyone. The Dead Don’t Die ) is a comedy film directed by Jim Jarmusch and starring Bill Murray and Adam Driver. Two local policeman of a small town try to keep order as zombies terrorize their city. I didn’t enjoy this film. 😞 There are aspects of this film that I enjoyed. Driver and Murray have solid chemistry and comedic timing. The movie is strongest when they interact. I enjoyed the character Zelda, portrayed by Tilda Swinton. She is a katana wielding mortician that even more unusual than the zombies. I did like some of the social commentary in the movie. Unfortunately, this movie’s start is incredibly boring. The plot really doesn’t get moving until halfway through the second act. Much of this time is spent on characters merely talking. Some of this is interesting, but the majority is irrelevant to the plot. The movie does play on cliches of the genre, but makes one of the characters unbearable to accomplish that. Many of the characters felt redundant and their presences only helped make the movie more boring. Overall, The Dead Don’t Die didn’t entertain me. I appreciated the efforts of Driver and Murray, Swinton’s bizarre character, and some of the social commentary. I didn’t enjoy the snail’s pace of the plot, redundant characters, and heavy emphasis on conversations that may or may not be relevant to the plot. I feel the ingredients are here for a more entertaining film, but the execution fell short. I’m not going to recommend this film. 🚫 Thank you all once again for watching. Please like, follow, and comment to share your thoughts with me.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story & Solo: A Star Wars Story... A couple of Star Wars anthology films. Still really hoping for a stand alone Obi-Wan Kenobi film (c’mon Disney, get it together).

49.) • Treasure Planet (2002) • Directors - Ron Clements and John Musker Cast - Joseph Gordan-Levitt, Emma Thompson, Martin Short, Brian Murray, David Hyde Pierce, Michael Wincott, and Laurie Metcalf • I can honestly say this is probably another guilty pleasure movie. But this is the most and best underrated Disney movie in my opinion. I grew up with this film as a kid like I was just obsessed and it’s stayed with me as a movie lover and as an artist (I’m an art student). I love sci-fi movies and these perfectly blends those sci-fi elements to a classic story which in my opinion is really boring but this movie really jazzes it up. The animation is impressive, and some of the sequences are just really awesome to watch unfold. There are the perfect amount of dark and light elements and I think the emotions ran fairly high in this film which I thought was great. it does get a bit cheesy and cliche here and there and the movie feels a bit rushed since it’s so short but overall with the lovable and badass characters, great voice acting, story, narrative, and dialogue. I think it’s extremely creative and interesting • #cinephiles #autogramtags #filmbuff #movienerd #filmnerd #cinephile #cinemalovers #instacinema #moviescenes #lovemovies #undefined #filmmaker #cinematographer #filmmaking #filmography #directorofphotography #undefined #filmmakers #undefined #cinematography #filming #disneylove #waltdisney #disneyland #minniemouse #disneylife #launchpadmcquack #ducktales2017 #liveactionaladdin #eugenefitzherbert

Cowspiracy: A slightly different film review, but I have always enjoyed documentaries and the interesting creative techniques used to depict the “truth” in which they wish to portray. Cowspiracy like many other documentaries has the purpose of enlightening its audience with the topic of sustainable living and the increase of greenhouse gasses. The viewpoint of the film is already decided and from the start the opinion is how cattle and agricultural industries are killing the planet. From the offset it is very clear the film has this one argument and this is what it wants to prove. The almost excessive use direct interviews, with probing questions, gives the film quite a aggressive style. The use of extreme close-ups and shallow depth of field, in the interviews, highlights the fact this film is searching for proof in the form of opinion, and highlights this aggressive style further. The beginning the interviews are predominantly with academics and environmentalist, montaged together to either explicitly contradict the narrator, in order to sound absurd, or strongly reinforce his beliefs. Later we see opinions from those who work in agriculture and health professionals. On the other hand some of the interviews give the film the more human touch which is needed as often the film becomes fact heavy and doesn’t seem to consider “real” human life. Don’t get me wrong, this film is predominantly built on research and facts, but the beginning sequences really tries to rally the audience onto the filmmakers side. The use of infographics is effective as they are simplistic, and easily understood. The use of simple bar charts, relative products (effects of one hamburger) and maps to emphasise the extremities of how agricultural is effecting or planet, works well in the film. The format gives it an almost lecture like feel and is made to seem studious, by this use of charts and visual statistics....

Killing Eve Season 2 (2019) 5/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 While it lacks a certain zip in the writing that Pheobe Waller Bridge gave to the 1st season and there is a slight change in tone season 2 of Killing Eve is pretty much note perfect. It's an absolute riot from start to finish! Sandra Oh and the supporting cast are fantastic but let's not fool ourselves this is Jodie Comers show. Without her portrayal of Villanelle the show just wouldn't be the same. The woman is incredible and easily one of my favourite actresses working today. Interstellar (2014) • Director - Christopher Nolan Cast - Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Mackenzie Foy, Michael Caine, Matt Damon, and Casey Affleck • this is seriously one of the best scenes in cinema history. not only is the story just genius but the acting is phenomenal. imagine leaving your 14 year old or something son to go to space and while you’re up there 23 years have gone by on earth while it’s only been a year for you. losing all that time and seeing them all grown up and even seeing him with a son that’s just so heavy. Christopher Nolan is one of the best visionary’s in all of cinema. also Timothée Chalamet growing up into Casey Affleck is pretty much everything I didn’t know I wanted in a movie • #moviebuff #autogramtags #filmbuff #moviejunkie #bluraycollector #starwars #nostalgia #geek #90s #cinematographer #directorofphotography #cinematographylife #filmmaking #filmmakers #videographer #behindthescene #cinematography #astronautlife #astronomyfacts #astronomer #astronomylover #truedetective #morganfreeman #robertdeniro #vincevaughn #thedarkknight #heathledger #filmaddict #michaelcaine #cmbyn

Here is THE MUMMY, directed by Karl Freund. This 1932 pre-Code horror film is another absolute classic Universal studios horror masterpiece. While not quite as much fun as Frankenstein, Boris Karloff gives an amazing performance as the titular character, and brings fear into each scene he enters. While not relying on too many typical scares, this film uses scenery and mood to shock the audience in their seats. Buy Bust, 2018. The formula I came up for describing this is Black Hawk Down meets The Raid in the slums of Manila during a monsoon. I don't know much about the drug wars in the Philippines. I do know that they have claimed countless lives, and are often seen as a callous and pointlessly brutal exercise on the part of the government for the sake of looking tough on crime. I'll just leave that there as context and an admission of my ignorance on the subject matter. . . I was surprised to see negative reviews, and a low rating on IMDb for this. As a piece of action filmmaking, I thought it was excellent. Although the martial arts are a little slow and the choreography a bit rudimentary when compared to the speed, intensity, and prodigiousness seen in films starring the likes of Tony Jaa or Iko Uwais, the orchestration of chaos is astounding. The clarity of the geography, almost overwhelmingly good camerawork and editing, and the ability to keep so many balls in the air while maintaining constant tension, make this a near perfect action film and thriller. I honestly can't imagine it being any better had anyone else made it with the same resources. There are some brawls that involve so many people, so many weapons, and so many individual fights within such a mazelike space, it's amazing the film didn't devolve into visually incoherent nonsense. . . I read negative reviews criticizing the film for the crass use of brutality-as-entertainment while pretending to be a somber think piece on the drug war in the Philippines. I understand this perspective from a film critic looking at movies post hoc, as text, but not when approaching it from the perspective of its creator. This film is clearly an attempt to humanize the victims of such violence, and provide the audience an experience that helps understand what life and death are like for anonymous statistics. In this way, I found the film to be moving, startling, and humanizing, rather than a lowbrow exercise in dehumanizing violence. I have also seen this movie criticized for being overly cynical. To me it is realistic, not cynical, and the notion that it is cynical comes from a place of extreme privilege.

Men In Black: International Release Date: June 14, 2019 Run Time: 1 hour 55 min Genre: Fantasy, Sci-fi Rated: PG 13 A rookie teams up with a senior agent to investigate increasingly peculiar alien activity that eventually threatens the safety of the Earth. TL;DR- Totally Lame; Don't Ruin (Non Spoiler) MIB International has a lot of heart, good action sequences, and stellar chemistry between its two leads. However, it squanders a lot of opportunities to "expand" on the plot and the characters. It follows the basic points of a typical buddy cop movie with certain scenes unnecessary to the overall plot and a trivial villain at the end. All in all, I did enjoy watching Hemsworth and Thompson together again so soon after Endgame. And that Thor reference (not a spoiler since it's in the trailer) was spot on. This movie is more along the lines of a good time rather than a good movie. Let me know what you thought in the comments! My rating: 6, $5 Tuesday/ Discounted Pricing

On this day in 2005, Batman Begins came out. Some things you may not know about this film are when Christian Bale and Liam Neeson were fighting on the frozen lake, they could hear the ice cracking beneath their feet. The Contender (2000) Director: Rod Lurie Main Cast: Joan Allen, Gary Oldman, Jeff Bridges Distributor: DreamWorks Pictures Rating: R (for strong sexual content and language) Genre: Drama The Vice President of the United States has suddenly died and the President is in search of a replacement. He finally chooses Laine Hanson, played by Joan Allen, and now it's up to Congress to vote on her nomination. The Contender factually shows how that process works and how intense it can be to be interviewed by senators in order to get your position. Joan Allen plays a powerful woman and one who doesn't give up any of her beliefs. Gary Oldman is one of the most talented actors and his portrayal of a senator is very realistic. He doesn't believe Hanson should be VP and tries hard to smear her past and her character. Jeff Bridges also does a nice job of portraying a president. The film is dramatic and shows all parties try to achieve thier goals. It's not a very memorable film experience and not a big award winner, but it does its job by showing audiences its story. The film is okay and if you enjoy political films, you'll probably enjoy The Contender. If politics bores you, skip this.
