⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ S M I L E ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s not really very surprising that herdies smile all the time. Let’s face it, they get to live amongst the ghylls and crags in arguably the most beautiful place on planet Earth. When I die I want to come back as a herdy. Not one of those pristine herdies you see in the valleys - nooooo, I’d like to come back as one of those raggedy looking dudes you see perched on tiny ledges trying to reach those delicious juniper trees. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This herdy was actually in very good condition right at the top of Sca Fell and she didn’t know whether she was coming or going which gave me plenty of time to compose a shot. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here’s a question for you: if you could come back as any animal what would it be and why? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromlakelandwithlove

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ P R I Z E  D R A W ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Good evening friends, hope you’ve had a brilliant action-packed or relaxing weekend. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As some of you already know I’ll be trekking to the Everest Base Camp in November this year to raise funds for the amazing charity Prevent Breast Cancer. Some of you have already very kindly donated, moving me closer to my overall target of £5,364 (the elevation of base camp). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To help me reach my target I’m running a prize draw to win a hand-knitted @ghyllandcrag hat. Yes, I know it’s not winter and hats are the last things on people’s minds but it’s always good to prepare 😁 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ghyll & Crag hats are knitted by hand right here in the Lake District. This particular hat is completely unique. It’s one of a kind and knitted specifically for this draw that nobody else in the world will have. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The draw will take place on Thursday 6th June (#herdythursday, woop!) and the winner will be announced via my Instagram Story. Ghyll & Crag can ship to anywhere in the world. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To enter all you need to do is donate a minimum of £2 via my sponsor page (see link in bio). Every £2 you donate will be an entry into the draw. So, if you donate £10 then your name will go into the draw 5 times meaning you’ll have 5 chances of winning. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you’ve already donated then you will automatically be entered into the draw. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Remember folks, this is for an amazing charity that work incredibly hard to help prevent this terrible disease that wrecks so many lives every year @preventbreastcancer ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #teameverest

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ S T A R W O R S H I P P E R S ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Humans have worshipped the sun since the very beginning, with many cultures believing it to be their one true God ☀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In ancient Egypt the sun god was Ra who was believed to cross the sky each day in his solar chariot. The Aztec sun god was Huitzilopochtli who demanded regular human sacrifices. In ancient Japanese mythology the sun goddess Amaterasu was believed to be the supreme ruler of the world. The Romans celebrated the feast of Sol Invictus meaning 'Unconquered Sun' on the 25th December every year which was later adopted by Christianity as Christmas.⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The stories about the sun and our relationship with it are fascinating and entertaining but I find the following facts even more so. ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our sun is a main sequence Yellow Dwarf that is 4.5 billion years old. The surface temperature is over 5000 degrees celsius and one day it will expand into the solar system, consuming the Earth before shrinking back down to the same size as the Earth. It will then be a White Dwarf but still have the same mass as it has today. We'll be long gone by then though!⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In case you haven't lost the will to live after reading all that, this was taken from Dale End near Little Langdale looking east towards Black Fell as Ra began his chariot ride across the sky. The trees worshipping their god and life-giver.⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromlakelandwithlove

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ T H E C H I L D R E N ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ First the sound of unbridled joy⠀ Of singing girl and humming boy⠀ From the dark their voice draws near⠀ Upon this crag, a tinge of fear ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Alone I stand in maelstrom mist⠀ With widened eyes and clenching fist⠀ Is someone there? I cannot see⠀ Upon this crag, should I flee? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Voices fade the wind subsides⠀ Relief and joy this lull provides⠀ A moment later crippled by fear ⠀ A whisper so soft in my ear ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A turn, a step, a slip, a fall⠀ The children came; I heard their call⠀ For with them fly the wings of death⠀ Upon this crag, my final breath ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fearthelakes

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ T O B L E R O N E ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hands up who loves that delicious triangular Swiss chocolate that nearly breaks your teef when you bite a piece off 🙋🏻‍♂️ Two hands up if you’re able to polish off a jumbo bar a single sitting 🙌 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This right here is the Matterhorn in Switzerland; probably the most iconic mountain in the world. If you asked a kid to draw a mountain, this is what they'd draw. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s exactly a year since we stood and stared at this colossus of a mountain. Part of me fantasised about climbing it and standing on the very narrow summit and the other part of me slapped me in the face and told me to stop being stupid and get another beer 😁 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Switzerland is somewhere I’d love to return and go for full-day hikes on the high trails. But then there’s the Dolomites and the Julian Alps; so many places to go and so little time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What location is ranked number 1 on your list of places to visit? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromswitzerlandwithlove

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ T H E  P A S S ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Swipe across to see a lucky motorist driving along one of England's greatest roads. Go on, I dares ya 😁 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It's been another very busy week which means I've had absolutely no time to think of a daft pointless story to accompany this post. It also feels like an age since I was out in the fells and shots like this just make me miss them even more. Next week I'm going to get amongst them. Maybe even a mini expedition. And a vlog. Hang about, that's getting outrageous now 😂 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Looking forward to tomorrow's From Lakeland with Love Instameet. It looks like the weather will be terrible but that's what the Lakes is all about. This spirit can't be crushed by a bit of wind and rain ☔ 🌧️💪 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromlakelandwithlove

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ O C H A Y E T H E C O O! ⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Nothing says 'Lake District' and 'Happy Easter' more than a Highland cow 😂 ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These wee ginger fluff balls are dotted all over Lakeland from Kirkstone to Buttermere and they're such a treat to see. On the whole they're very placid critters but I definitely would not like to be on the receiving end of one of them there horns! 💀 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I took this a couple of months ago after the finest of winter walks up Pike o' Blisco. This gorgeous lady knew I like low-key lighting and had positioned herself inside a dimly lit barn so that I could take her portrait; what a superstar!⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hope you're all having a wonderful Easter weekend folks! ⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromlakelandwithlove

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ V A L L E Y D R I V E⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Good evening folks! Happy Friday to you all⁣ 🙌 ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You'll be relieved to hear that I won't bore you to death with ghoulish stories today because, well, I can't be arsed⁣ 😁 ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Instead I shall just leave you with one of my favourite views (I think I say that a lot 🤔) looking up Dunmail Raise. You can just make out Thirlmere and Raven Crag. In the background is Lonscale Fell that leads up to the behemoth that is Skiddaw.⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Would you like this photo on your wall? Well, it's available in my shop in varying sizes (www.blackcrag.uk/shop). And if you do buy a print you'll be putting food on this photographer's table⁣ 🙏 ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromlakelandwithlove

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ T H E Q U A R R Y M A N⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He was a grafter. He worked 15 hours a day, 6 days a week in the dark pit of the quarry; the first man in after the TNT blasts and the last man out. Moving tons of slate to the surface, often with his bare hands, to put food on the table for his wife and boy. ⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Over the years he'd seen it all. From young cocksure lads being blown to smithereens through dynamite misuse to brutal foremen bullying the quarrymen, and these were tough men, to breaking point. Heck, there was even the time when the quarry owner, a vile but extremely wealthy man from the south, visited with his beautiful young bride who ended up floating face down in one of the flooded sections of the quarry. Face down but faceless; she'd been decapitated somehow and her head was never found. ⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But none of this fazed the quarryman. He was a grafter and just kept on doing what was asked of him; for his wife and boy. ⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That is until his final day of working the slate.⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Continued in comments section.... ⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fearthelakes⁣

⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ S T O B D E A R G⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This has to be one of the most photographed mountains in the whole of the United Kingdom. And it's not really that hard to see why. It's shaped like a 'proper' mountain, it's one of the first big boys you see in the Highlands and it's right by the road! In fact the car may or may not have been abandoned in the middle of the road when we debussed for this shot like some weird nerdy SAS patrol - "go! go! go!"⁣ 🤪 ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I'm already looking forward to getting back up this way. I'd like to make Stob Dearg my first Scottish mountain climb as I'd absolutely love to see what the views are like from the top. I promise, I'll take some photos!⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I'll remember this particular weekend with great fondness for the rest of my life. Sure the scenery was incredible, but it was the gorgeously beautiful people I spent it with that made it. @will.holligan, @sophierowles_ and @jenfish504 are the bestest pals anybody could ever ask for......and top photographers to boot, check 'em out if you don't follow them already!⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromscotlandwithlove

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ T H E T W I N S⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I tracked these two for 6 days and 6 nights across precipitous mountains and expansive valleys; never quite seeing them fully. Just their tracks and the occasional fleeting glimpse of a black woolly bottom disappearing around the corner of a crag or crest of grassy hillock.⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ OK, they were actually just trotting in front of me on the path for about 5 minutes a few months ago, but that doesn't seem very dramatic does it. They're a couple of beauties, though, that's for sure⁣ 🖤 ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It's been a weird ol' week. From Thursday afternoon until midday on Saturday I switched my phone off completely whilst yomping around the Langdales on the #mountainleadertraining exped. It's probably the longest I've ever been without my phone and out of contact with the whole world. And you know what? It's was alright. No, it was great, actually!⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I'd love to know what you guys have been up to this weekend. Any Lakeland adventures?⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromlakelandwithlove⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ P I K E O' S T I C K L E ⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣The name of this incredibly wonderful little cone of rock literally translates to 'peak of steep place' and it really isn't surprising that it has such a name when you're stood at the top, gazing into the valley far below.⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It has to be one of my all-time favourite fells and if you're interested to see what the views are like from the top go check out my Langdale Pikes vlog (youtube.com/blackcrag). And if you really can't stomach watching me jabbering on, just skip ahead to⁣ 13:10 😁 ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Mountains are, except for my wife and dog, the love of my life. It's difficult to explain to those who don't understand the magnetic pull, but when I'm up high and surrounded by the rock and grass, bogs and becks, in the wind and rain, snow and sunshine - I'm utterly at peace. My mind is empty (even more than usual!)⁣ and I'm just happy. So damned happy.⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ All that sounds very clichéd and perhaps a little vomit-inducing but I know others feel the same way. There's nothing quite like being away from humanity in a place that really doesn't care if you live or die. ⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This week I'm embarking on my Mountain Leader training. I want to solidify my knowledge so that I can take others into the mountains. So that they can experience those euphoric feelings on the summit of our beautiful peaks.⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Is anybody interested in following my progress, both on the course and beyond? ⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromlakelandwithlove⁣ ⁣ ⁣

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1 3 1 3 ⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This here is one of the best places on the planet. Fact. I know that's a bold statement but it's simply the truth.⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, built in 1313, are certainly worth a visit and very distinctive on the skyline but it's actually the beach behind the camera that makes this place so special.⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You approach from the north along an extensive arc of fine white sand beside a turquoise North Sea; galloping white horses thundering to the shoreline. The sand finally gives way to a field of black rocks peppered with barnacles and teaming with eight-legged crusty critters 🦀 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Back along the beach is one of the finest pubs in the country and beyond that are two more incredibly beautiful beaches.⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ No wonder we go back every year!⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromnorthumberlandwithlove

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ M Y  B E S T  F R I E N D ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🎶...and I want you to know that my feelings are true...I really looooove you...Oh, you're my best friend 🎶 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That's right; I'm singing a love song to my bag! 😍 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ May I formally introduce you to Gigantor; my faithful rucksack, camera bag, choccie carrier, friend and confidant. Some of you might recognise this big strapping fella from my YouTube vlogs. He's always there; always got my back - literally! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I think many of you outdoors enthusiasts understand this love for a bag. A bag isn't just a bag; it's a symbol of escape and promise of exploration and adventure. I LOVE seeing Gigantor packed and ready by the door, scratching to be let out. If I could, I'd wear this guy on my back every single precious day. Because it would mean I was outside and probably up a mountain somewhere. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That said, I'd probably also like to reserve a space in my bed for him as he is that precious and important 😂 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ By the way, this isn't an advert. I really do love @fstopgear bags but they haven't asked me to post anything and I certainly won't get paid for it; I bought this bag with my own money. I just believe in credit where it's due. This bag has completely transformed my days in the mountains. I could write all day about how good it is, but I think you get the idea. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromlakelandwithlove

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A  T H R O N E  U P O N  T H E  B L A C K  W A V E S ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When you're stood in this valley with just the sound of the wind rushing through the heather and the cascading waterfalls, it's very easy to forget its tumultuous history. From super-volcano to vast glaciers to bloody clan massacres; Glencoe has seen some incredible action! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And what joy to be able to sit on this seat and immerse yourself in all that history; unmolested, in complete silence and surrounded by nature....and the gazillion cars driving along the A82 just yards away. Photographers zipping here there and everywhere shouting "bangers, my dudes!". When you've finally quietened the mind and blanked out these annoying sounds you'll be struck in the head by a discarded bottle from a passing car coz that's wot dem cool kidz do now innit bruv. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Millions of years in the making and it's now - I'm very sad to say - a bit of a shithole! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This wasn't meant to be a rant so I'm going to turn it back around. If you try to ignore the crap everywhere around the popular areas it really is a breathtakingly beautiful place and somewhere I most definitely would like to revisit to do some higher walks; away from the crowds. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This was taken last weekend when I visited with the most awesome of dudes @jenfish504, @sophierowles_ and @will.holligan. They were difficult shooting conditions because we were laughing so damned much from the very minute we got in the car in Cumbria! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I very nearly missed this shot. I was packing up and figuring out how to get the car out of the ditch it was parked in. Young Will shouted "look at that guys!" and sprang away - click click click. So, thank you Will for encouraging me to get my camera back out.... Despite my grumbling 😁 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You can really see the effects of glaciation in this photo as the ice and rock will have carved its way through the glen. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromscotlandwithlove

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ W A R P A I N T ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Let me see your warfaaaaaace! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is Kirk Fell's cara de guerra! Don't mess with the best coz the best don't mess 🖕 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Happy Sunday folks! Ahooo! Ahooo! Ahooo! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromlakelandwithlove

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ F A R M E R, S U N & T H E H O L Y G O A T ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Goats. I loves them! They're so joyful and fearless; climbing on things that no four-legged hoofed critter should ever climb on - just Google 'goats on dam' and you'll see what I mean 🐐 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ They're also really hard to push over* It's as though they're filled with concrete! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We often walk in the grounds of nearby @levenshall and enjoy watching the rare breed Bagot goats. If you're ever in the South Lakes area you should put this place on your list to visit. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This particular chap made me feel pretty inadequate to be honest. It's painfully clear that I need to seriously raise my beard game 🤣 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #beardgoals ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ * I'm not in the habit of pushing goats over, it was merely a casual observation 😁 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ V E I L E D ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If there's one thing that makes a mountain even more impressive to behold - besides the steep rock, walls of ice and the odd semi-clad voluptuous woman (another story), - it's that condensed water vapoury goodness. AKA cloud. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Cloud can turn even the most pathetic sack o' sh*te hill into the most epic-looking precipitous peak worthy of a place in Middle Earth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This mountain in Switzerland was initially veiled from us but as the hours passed it slowly began to reveal itself; the cloud drawing back to show us razor-sharp ridges and abyssal drops into dark nothingness. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This mountain was no sack o' sh*te. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fromswitzerlandwithlove
